This is actually a film I want to see a remake for.

Can't believe I'm saying that but its true.

I never saw the original film when I was younger, it was the type of film my older brother was in to. I did eventually see the film a few years ago and what struck me was how lacking in credibility the bad guys were, even for 1974. They all had one character trait, to be as self-serving as possible, and never distinguished themselves from the last guy he shot thus were none of them particularly memorable.

There was no improvement with the sequels (well the one and a half I got through) with each story just being a by-the-numbers set-up to justify our blood lust to watch Charles Bronson blow each of them away.

If they truly wanted these films to be engaging on an emotional level, above the thrill one might get from watching a bad person killed, then they really needed the bad guys to have credible personalities and motivations that go beyond just having a good time.

This story had such potential and personally I think Michael Winner buggered much of that up.

If they intend with the remake to address the original film's shortcomings, then I couldn't care less who they cast in it.

"I don't reckon I got no reason to kill nobody."
