Saw it last night...

...at the NFT and my verdict is.....it's quite good. Not brilliant, but watchable. Some good performances from the mainly young cast, particularly the two leads. Anyone expecting a straight-up 'hooligan' film will be disappointed though. Much like Kevin Sampson's book, the film is essentially a love story set against a backdrop of football violence. The fighting is integral to the plot, but secondary to the relationship between Carty and Elvis.

The Q&A afterwards was interesting, albeit brief. Liam Boyle can certainly talk!

STFC Gloucester,

Could you tell me whether Holly Grainger, who stars as Molly, was at the gala screening? If she was, could you point in the direction of a website that has photos of her attending this event?

Saw it yesterday (Monday) at NFT and would agree with stfc about it not being brilliant but certainly watchable, maybe I just loved the book too much.

Good soundtrack, although a little less Ultravox and a bit more Joy Division would have been my preference perhaps with a bit of Kraftwerk thrown in.

Acting was good as stated above with the usual solid performance from Stephen Graham. I thought it overdone the Carty / Elvis relationship although this is obviously important in the book as well and I thought they could have explained more about the fashion which to me was why KS wrote the book in the first place, i.e. the scouse one upmanship on being the first to be dressed differently at the match.

Good points were they certainly gave the film a late 70s early 80s look with clothing helped by adidas reissuing many classics from the era, although I heard somewhere the had to have the Peter Storm's especially made and a nice touch with the Diesel train with old style carriages, that brought back some memories.

Bad point as usual with these films seem to be the fight scenes which were way to choreographed where everyone in the far too small mob seems to pair off into one on one's and with the losers all left on the floor groaning, while in reality these encounters were pretty violent they would usually last a very short time a quickly result in one group giving way (running).

All in all though just looking at the film as a standalone and disregarding the book it just about squeezes 4 out of 5.

Kale,

I sincerely hope Holly Grainger gets invited to the official UK premiere of "Awaydays". She has yet to be photographed walking down the red carpet.

HOLLY was not at the premier due to a conflicting schedule.
