Can anyone explain to me what is going on in this movie?

Some key questions I have as a Canadian?

- what was the nature of Carty and Elvis' relationship? Were they homos or what, and what the hell were they talking about?
- is there no love in English society? Is the only thrill in life to destroy each other?
- how did the English ever become a geopolitical superpower if they are infested with such vile characters?
- who am I supposed to sympathize with from this wretched bunch?

Been a while since I saw it so I may be a bit vague:

One of them was a closet homosexual - the other was straight (cliche much).

Football Hooliganism exists but it is such a minority that every one of them could fit into Manchester United's ground. The media like to hype bad behaviour by the lower classes, as it allows them to sneer, bully and belittle. It also has the added benefit of destroying pride and confidence that working class people should have in spades.
Posh boys condescendingly think that there is glamour and honour in hooliganism. Every football hooligan related film will always have "stars" with names like Timothy, Tuppence, Paprika, Benjamin, Charles etc etc in them.
Being upper class means you choose what films will be made and for some unknown reason they think playing a hooligan is showing range.

We became a superpower thanks to:
Successive rulers who realised the importance of investing heavily in the Navy and Army.
Spending fortunes on designing the best weapons and equipment for the Navy and Army.
Long established, good quality, Schools and Colleges.
The inventiveness of the people.
The absolute obedience of its people (won through millennia of subjugation)
The industrial revolution.
Being an Island (hard to invade).
Luck.

Sympathise with anyone who has to watch it whilst sober.

I just got the impression that Elvis was lonely and probably secretly gay. Hence why he killed himself. For a hooligan film, this is one of the better ones.
