I work with a girl from South Africa
When I first met her I asked her a bunch of run of the mill 'Africa' questions. Being a movie guy and having District 9 as possibly my favorite movie of all time I wanted to ask her about it. So one of the questions was if she had seen District 9 and if so how did she feel about it? She told me she had seen it and enjoyed it.
I asked how she felt about the refugees in Joburg and how they were portrayed in D9. Clearly to me they are mistreated and easy to sympathize with. She understood and asked me to picture the same situation in my own city (I live in Chicago). She said to imagine if a large number of immigrants suddenly settled down in Millennium Park (huge beautiful park in Chicago). And with these refugees came crime, fear, filth, etc. Honestly I hadn't considered this prospect. Strangely enough Chicago is facing a very similar situation right now with Syrian immigrants possibly moving in soon.
Just thought it was interesting to hear a first hand perspective from someone who had lived in Joburg.
