Is there ever any explicit explanation as to why Pete is an alcoholic?

I love this show so far (I am in the beginning of season 4 right now). It just intrigued me how Pete is "on the wagon." Do we ever learn why exactly? Is it because of his past, or being in the Marines? Or is it something that comes towards the end of the series?

They never actually pinpoint exactly when Pete began using alcohol. Several aspects of his character were based on Eddie McClintock, who himself was a recovering alcoholic. The more I think about this show the more I miss it...

I did not know that Eddie McClintock was a recovering alcoholic, but that makes total sense for his character. After some googling, it seems as though his character's sobriety roughly mirrors his own. It also goes along with the characters of Myka and Pete, Myka being more straight-laced, and Pete being kind of "messed up."

Alcoholism is a disease. It's not something that will randomly develop or be triggered by something.

The character was an active service soldier-look at the rates of drug/alcohol use by veterans-alcoholism is triggered by such things as that, whatever the theoretical dispositions for it.

Servicemen (and other people in general) who use alcohol to cope with difficulties or avoid negative emotions are abusing alcohol. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism are not the same thing. Alcoholism has the same symptoms as alcohol abuse, but it's different in that it's a physical dependence on alcohol.

Alcoholism can manifest in people who begin to abuse alcohol. But that's because it triggers the predisposition to alcoholism that already existed.

He drank to forget, but he never told anyone so the secret was lost with his memory. It's a pity alcoholism wasn't more easily cured, it seems like such a good way to free up brain space for more new memories.

In many people there is a genetic propensity to become dependent on alcohol.

The fact that Pete has the gift of intuition, the marines and being the only man in the house could of caused some problems as he was torn between being himself (intuition wise) and being a "man" along with what was learned in Trials about his abandonment issues, alcohol could of been a way to suppress those feelings (including the guilt he felt about his fathers death) then became a habit that was hard to break (once you find a way not to feel unwanted emotions it's hard to break) also because he felt abandonment or alone the bottle was the only thing that wouldn't leave him
