Series made in Canada are subsidized by the government for a maximum of 5 years. After that its sink or swim on your own. WH13's ratings during S4 made it not profitable enough to continue w/o the subsidy.

Sci fi channel has stated that they are only interested in running shows for 5 years. Sg1 was picked up by sci fi in season 6. Sg atlantis 5 seasons. Sg universe was planned with 5 seasons as was farscape. Eureka had 5. Falling skies 5. Etc

Didn't help that they cut Season 4 in two, leaving a 6 month gap between.

Something that also did not help Eureka. There you got a whopping 10 months gap in season 3 and a 6 months gap in season 4.

Similar thing happened with Lost Girl, although again it might have more been because of the 5 subsidised seasons thing.

Although looking into it Lost Girl just had months long gaps (around 10 months between each) between the seasons, except for Season 5 that had a 8 month break right in the middle

The problem was NOT the gap between the two halves of season 4. In the time it took them to do 13 episodes in Season 3, they did 20 episodes in Season 4. Check the dates on IMDB if you don't believe me.

I can't prove it but I think the reason for expanded (20/21 episodes) split season 4's for both Eureka and WH 13 came about for basically the same reason; during S3 of both shows the writers managed to alienate rock solid fans. The end was looking pretty likely although not set in stone. In any case the expanded number of episodes in Season 4 was imo in part an attempt to save the shows by having more content during the year but also it may have well to do with getting more content to syndicate before the subsidy expired.

That explains a lot about Syfy and why nothing runs very long except reality and rasslin.
