Canadian actor and comedian Andre Arruda died Saturday after a lifelong bout with Morquio syndrome, a rare birth defect associated with dwarfism. He was 33.

"As an actor, stand-up comedian and writer, Andre will always be remembered as the little man who gave us some big laughs," Arruda's agent, Jana Abrams, said on her Facebook page. She confirmed his passing due to complications from the genetic disorder at St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto.





Born in Kitchener, Ontario, on March 11, 1983, the Toronto-based comic and actor was known by his stage name Andre "the Anti-Giant" Arruda. His stand-up act often started with Arruda, who stood slightly more than 3 feet tall, breaking the ice with his audience by saying, "I know what you're thinking … Yes, I'm Portuguese."

Canadian actors and comics paid tribute to Arruda on news of his passing. Second City alum Kirsten Rasmussen on her Twitter account said: "What a wonderful impact he had on this community. So hilarious and kind and strong."

"RIP to the Iron Man, Andre Arruda," Canadian writer and actor Jon Blair, added.





Arruda's film and TV credits included American Pie: The Naked Mile, The Russell Peters Christmas Special, Story of Luke, Warehouse 13, Kenny vs. Spenny, Hank and Mike, Happenchance and Vice’s Standing Up With Andre Arruda.

Arruda is survived by his parents, Louis and Teresa Arruda, and his brother, Mark. A memorial service will be held Friday in Kitchener.
