They gave Phillips way too much creative control over this one

They clearly estimated him after the first one. I'm all for riskier projects, but making this a musical and hearing what direction he takes the story in this one I can't believe someone from the studio didn't step in at some point and tell him to take a step back.

Pretty sure it was Joaquin that insisted on it being a musical. He's a weird dude.

Great actor, but really is a fucking weirdo.

Sometimes you gotta experiment to know what the actual limitations are for certain genres or storytelling. If people react to it strongly, and it sounds like they will, then studios will learn from it.

But the first film was pretty much the opposite of experimental. It was like if you put a few certain films into a blender and added the Joker. I still enjoyed it and it came out at the right time for it to feel fresh, but if you're going to have a sequel then it seems like the exact wrong time to "experiment." Now they've created expectations for people. If Phillips and/or Phoenix wanted to experiment then do something actually new.

Experiment? I think that is the winning formula of "put a chick in it and make it lame and gay", it has been well experimented in various Disney owned franchises, I reckon they just think we need further "education" to embrace it.
