Are there too many characters? (spoilers welcome)

I watched a few episodes and I didn't think any of the characters were really interesting. Ragnar Lothbrok was the main character in the first few seasons of the original Vikings show while there are too many characters in Valhalla getting screen time. It also could be that the actors were more accomplished in the Vikings series.

It seems like the women are either the smartest in the room or the greatest warriors. Emma of Normandy was astutely watching over the defense of the London Bridge and shouting out commands to the castle defenders. Frida is so powerful that she is a one woman army taking out all her enemies. I also thought it was blasphemous to concoct a storyline about a Christian rapist who carved a cross into Frida's back.
