Question about hippies?

It seems hippies were just a bunch of self-absorbed, pretentious douchebags. "Hey gang, let's burn our draft cards and go dance naked in a field. Groovy, Man."

Hippies are better than a bunch of gang bangers and crack heads i tend to find myself surrounded by.

Sorry if I confused you. I was inviting anyone with an opinion to comment on the first sentence of the OP. For example, "you're right, because . . ." or "you couldn't be more wrong, because . . . ." Theses are seldom labeled as such in intelligent works, however I had hoped I wouldn't have to spoon feed it in a post of only three sentences.

You are not alone in this simplistic stereotype derived from popular media and taken as truth by simpletons.

Start by reading an overview, then delve into more rigorous sociological research on this cultural phenomena that still impacts everyday life.

This movie is not about hippies. It's about an entire generation, most of whose males wore their hair long. A hippie is a dropout - peaceable, just wants to grow his organics and smoke his weed. Among the Woodstock crowd there were certainly long-haired hippies AND long-haired students and long-haired veterans, etc. Long hair and drug use were prevalent in the Sixties, but not all long-haired drug-using, Rock-loving young people were hippies.

And plenty of kids besides hippies burned their draft cards, both as an act of free speech and civil disobedience.

What in the world are you going on about? Do you have a problem with long hair?
How old are you? The reason I ask this is because of your last line.....

hippy philosophy was based PRIMARILY on two things
Drugs and Music

the most simplistic analogy of 60's era hippy philosophy was that they believed they could bring peace to the whole world with nothing but the sheer power of their music and through the use of psychedelic drugs.

and i guess if i wanted to add a 3rd item to the list it would be the rejection of the vietnam war.

The hippies were looking to change the old ways of 1950's society and that's EXACTLY what they did (minus the bringing peace to the world through music bit).

I graduated from high school in 1970 and seeing the documentary "Woodstock" was my first awareness of the "hippy". In my opinion the attendees of the Woodstock concert are the high water mark of the tuned-in tide. Woodstock behavior seemed pretty advanced and inventive to me at the time.

Before Woodstock, many cities had "Love-In"s, my city being Wichita, KS, it seemed pretty silly compared to the footage coming in from the West Coast. And even that only shocked our parents who had just given in to Beatle's haircuts.

After Woodstock, I actually think you could have asked any hippie you happened to see, "Excuse me hippie, how is it that you came to be a self-absorbed, pretentious douchebag?" and you would have been regaled by a rather long winded explanation steeped in what we used to refer to as, bowl-shee-yat.

Historically, the hippie was probably our nation's most non-consequential populous. They dotted the landscape like cattle and were just as interesting.

Each slang term seemed to be spoken as if to be invented on the spot. "Hey man, don't lay that TRIP on me, I don't need the HASTLE, man!" The only threat the hippie seemed to present was boring dialog.

YOU, Alan Smithee Esq, you have the makings of a historian!

theres nothing wrong with hippies, just like theres nothing wrong with different races or different types of people... as long as theyre respectful and nice people with good intentions at heart..thats all that matters in my book.
