New Netflix Series "The Watcher" Confronts the Licorice Pizza Age Issue

Its 2022 about a year after the release of Licorice Pizza and there is a 7-episode TV thriller on Netflix(based on true events, natch) called "The Watcher."

Its about a family moving into a nice -- but old -- surburban New Jersey two story house and being subjected to voyeuristic harassment by a "watcher" who sends them threatening letters.

As a subplot, the father of the family (Bobby Cannavale) finds out that his 16 year old daughter is secretly "seeing" a 19-year old male.

The father -- already driven to near madness from "the watcher" -- goes nuts and calls a cop out to his home. The boyfriend is there and so is the daughter. The father wants the boyfriend arrested: "She's 16! And he's 19!"

The cop calmly shakes his head. "This is New Jersey, sir. The age of consent is 16. We won't be arresting the young man."

Scene over . Issue over. If the "kids" were to move in Licorice Pizza, all would be well.

There is nothing morally or legally wrong with a nineteen-year-old going out with a sixteen-year-old. I dated and hung out with under-eighteen girls when I was nineteen and in my early twenties. So what? We enjoyed each other's company, and we didn't have sex, so no harm done. Those girls are all women in their fifties now, and I am certain not one of them thinks she was in any way traumatized by knowing me.
