meh

I'm a fan of McAdams, Ford and Keaton and thought the low box office seemed cruel since the reviews were decent. Then I finally saw the movie. Something was missing for me. McAdams' character was endearingly perky...but then it got old. Ford was gruff...but then it got old. Keaton was sort of ill defined - Keaton is naturally likable but I couldn't tell if I was meant to like her character or not. Was she vain? Was she kooky? I think the writing wasn't there yet. This felt like a first draft.

Broadcast News did this better.

I somewhat agree with your opinion. I feel like the movie took way too long to set up the relationship between McAdams and Ford. I think I would have preferred Sean Connery or Clint Eastwood in this role instead of Ford. Keaton was good as usual, but the movie decided to make her a bitch off the bat and then somehow miraculously change her. The writer did not lay out the story in a believable fashion. I also thought they could have chosen a better suitor than the wooden Patrick Wilson. However, I did enjoy the concept and I thought McAdams did a great job with the role.
