Since when was Diane Keaton's acting style so unlikable?

Between this, Because I Said So, Smother, and half of Something's Gotta Give, she has gone from being an exciting, energetic free-spirit to a soul-crushing, histrionic, self-obsessed harpy. And it isn't just the roles she's taking. She could come across a lot less cartoony by not going over the top with everything.

Yeah, I actually think recently she's been awful. And I like chick flicks, I liked Because I Said So, but her characters are just obnoxious and her acting is completely over the top and not in a good way. She was the worst part of Because I Said So and Mad Money and certainly not the shining star of Morning Glory.

It's really depressing to watch, actually. She used to be so good.

I find a lot of her characters to be unlikeable. Maybe she's only been doing that later in her career, but it's what I have usually see of her roles.

Well in what I'd seen her in before, which was only Somethings Gotta Give and The Family Stone, I found her completely unlikeable!!! but in this I actually didn't mind her. She wasn't the most interesting character but she was ok I thought...

Yeah, I always think of her as uptight or varying degrees of unlikeable.

I have only seen bits and pieces of The Family Stone. I had to turn it off. Too many unlikeable, hypocritical characters. IT bordered on absurd at times.

I actually agree with that. If I look back (off the top of my head) Annie Hall, Play it Again Sam, Love and Death, Manhatten Murder Mystery, Godfather, I've never actually liked her characters. Because I Said So (way too hysterical), SGG, Smother, this, and especially that god awful Family Stone, to me, she just very unlikeable characters.

I'm sure Diana fans would greatly disagree though.

That's untrue I actually liked her in "Something's Gotta Give", which was a parody of her real life experiences. The difference between SGG and the other movies was that it had a better script, production values, cinematography etc.

Two movies I've watched, "Family Stone" and "Because I Said So" were horrible on the whole because of the horrible script/story and not her acting. The production was so bad as a whole I wanted to punch the scriptwriter/director/whoever the hell thought producing it was ok. I think she was unlucky to have landed roles in productions that sucked ass.

What I've noticed is that lately, she's been typecast into portraying neurotic characters after SGG, so if you don't like neurotic characters you wouldn't like the characters she plays.

I haven't watched "Smother" or "Mad Money" but I heard the movies were passable. Although nothing stellar on the scale of "Something's Gotta Give" or the comedies Meryl's been landing on her plate recently. If it wasn't for "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Mamma Mia" would she be getting all the good lead romantic comedy roles?

I, personally, have always found her characters unlikeable. I found her the most likable in this film because her character wasn't pretending to be likable like in every other movie she does.. on another note, McAdams is normally very likable but her character drove me crazy in this film!!
