Anyone see the parallell between Ford's character and his career?

When Mike Pomeroy rants that he is a legend and above being part of a such a crappy morning news show, it's hard to miss the subtext of Harrison Ford making a statement about his own career and now being a supporting actor in a mediocre movie. Sorry if this is too obvious to even mention.

Definitely took note of that too.
It doesn't seem very subtle at this point though.

It might have been an apt comparison ten or fifteen years ago, but not when you're starring in stuff like Firewall and Hollywood Homicide. And really, even in his glory days, his big hits were mostly just popcorn films, as entertaining as they were. His character in this movie was supposed to be a serious, award winning journalist. Ford hasn't won any major film awards, and as much as I'm entertained by many of his films, I've never really considered him a serious actor.

True, but Ford was solid in the Jones role at least.

There certainly was a sad parallel between film Ford and real-life Ford in the movie. Still, I give him a lot of credit for his acting chops. It takes a special kind of actor to create larger-than-life personas like Indiana Jones and Han Solo. That's stuff you can't learn in acting class. He's also been fantastic in several smaller films like Witness, The Mosquito Coast, and his character in The Fugitive was electric.

It was sad to watch him grumble and drag his feet through this flick.

I was thinking the same thing. He had two of the most iconic roles in film, and now he is rarely the only lead actor in movies. I thought it was a weird, but apt parallel.

Ford always made popcorn films.

Its that man again!!

I actually thought Firewall was a more pathetic venue for Ford to find himself in.

A rom-com like Morning Glory, set in the glitzy world of television and centered around an "in crowd" group of people, has a "larger than life" aura about it. You feel like you're watching something made by and about people who sorta matter in the world. So, Ford as a renowned journalist, albeit one who's seen better days, fits nicely into that scenario.

Whereas Firewall was a borderline straight-to-video action movie, there really was nothing entrancing about the storyline or the characters. It was the kind of role that could easily have been played by a second-tier or even a no-name actor.

From an audience perspective that might be dead on, but for some weird reason Ford has actually gone out of his way to say how pleased he was to have been involved in this movie.

Personally, I can't see why he found it so appealing, but I don't think that he sees it as a step down, unlike the character he plays when he's first offered the position at the beginning of the film.

No. Harrison Ford has taken different types of roles in films throughout his career. This is another variation.
