Mom's discouragement overkill

As romantic comedies go, I thought this one was very enjoyable and well done. The one part that really flopped for me was Becky's mom's speech about how embarrassing and unrealistic her goals are. Huh? A 28-year-old with even a mid-level job in television is doing fine, especially in this job market. (Yes, she just lost her job, but that was clearly about budget cuts, not lack of ability.) It's not like she's trying to become a ballerina or movie star either. She's just trying to advance in a field where she's already gained experience and shown some talent. Mom's reaction makes no sense.

Obviously the screenwriters did this because every determined heroine needs doubters to tell her she can't do it before she trumphantly shows them she can. But that was lame.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. And there was never any closure to that, I mean a good way to adjust for it would have been to have a scene after she found out that the show was going to be cancelled, and McAdam's character no longer is confident about the show, but she gets to talking with her mom over the phone, and mom admits that she was only so hard because she is still bitter about what happened with the father. Maybe then it would have been acceptable.
