I am a big Mirren fan, but this film...not so much. I know her husband and director Taylor Hackford has had some successful films, but "White Nights" with her was not one of them. Perhaps they should avoid working together, because I didn't think she could look unsexy and yet her own husband managed it. Her scenes with the boxer (sorry, can't recall his name since he didn't make an impact) were uncomfortable to watch--especially the love scenes. Pesci to me was playing Pesci. I expected more from his scenes with Mirren, but perhaps it was a matter of her character's strength overlapping his that tamed him down as he did much better in his scenes with other characters. I frankly blame Hackford for most of the film's weakness, then again he was working with a relatively small budget and a horrendous ad campaign. In addition, you were lucky to find it playing in a theater as it went almost straight to video. I like Pesci, but he seemed to be sleepwalking through this one. Perhaps he knew he was standing on the deck of a sinking ship and needed his breath.
