I wouldn't really compare those to this movie. None of the movies you mentioned made people wanna slit their wrists.
shareI didn't want to slit my wrists form this movie. It was sad, btu I've seen WAY more depressing.
The Champ was about the same level of depressing as this.

I enjoyed it strictly because I"m a big wrestling fan. I wouldn't say it's the most depressing ever, but it's up there. Requiem for a dream was the worst I ever saw probably. Didn't realize it was the same guy doing this movie until after the fact.
shareGrave of the Fireflies makes Requiem for a Dream look like a light comedy.
And Million Dollar Baby which the OP listed was way more depressing than The Wrestler IMO.

For some reason it seems like the more disturbing and depressing a movie is, the more it is considered some sort of masterpiece. Also with dream sequences added on as well. I've heard that with requiem, black swan, and a few others. I'd put black swan and requiem for a dream in my top 5 movies that I despised the most. I"m not putting it down, to each his own, but it is totally not my thing.
shareTh closest movie to this in depressing was Requiem for a Heavyweight with Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, and Mickey Rooney. It was filmed in black and white in the sleaze of old New York. Plus it had the old great boxers in some gritty looking bars drinking beer.
