Winter setting

I wonder if this was deliberately shot during the winter to fuel the overall sadness that carries the film. The grey in the sky. The coldness in the air. It symbolizes - for me anyway - Randy's isolation, albeit self-imposed.

It definitely hits a bit harder because of it. I live in the Northeast and I can say that it certainly added another element to the impending life of poverty. I know that feeling of wondering how that next rent gets paid or the heating bill etc. This film works in everyday real life. If we saw the Glory Years, it would be a completely different film. There's no escape from the inevitable.

They made the work scenes look particularly dismal. Working at a grocery store isn't the sunniest job in the world, but my god they made it look so bleak and dreary. Like more depressing than prison.

The scenes of him working in the deli run a parallel with the scenes as he performs in his wrestling matches, even has another name, Robin, for his deli job, just like how he has a stage name, Ram, for his wrestling persona. The point is identity loss.

I think the weather just reinforces the idea that the end of your life can be pretty cold and lonely...
