I like it more after rewatching it.
First time I saw this last year I honestly didn't care for it. Considered it the worst of the five Scream films.
The issues I had are still there, namely;
- Too many callbacks and homages. Relies far too much on recreating the original Scream.
- The commentary on current horror films is a bit too on the nose.
- The new cast don't measure up to the originals.
- The Ghostface reveal doesn't make sense as one of the people responsible for the kills couldn't possibly have overpowered some of their victims like they did in the movie.
- This one is nitpicky as it's very common in horror films but many of the calls and ghostface attacks happened too precisely. The timing was too perfect and takes you out of the film a touch, doesn't feel natural.
- The whole ghost of Billy Loomis thing is pretty silly.
I found these to be less irritating this time around, a first time rewatch ahead of Scream VI. The new cast is alright I recalled Jenna Ortega being good in this and she was even better than I remembered, she was fantastic whenever on screen. Melissa Barrera got a lot of criticism for her performance, which many considered flat and lacking in emotion, but I actually think she was fine.
I actually had a similar reaction when I first rewatched Scream 4 after a decade. Didn't care for it the first time around back in 2011 but liked it quite a lot the second time around. Maybe I'm too harsh on these films with my expectations and hype.
