Spoilers

With Sidney I could sort of understand. She had her own family now and she and Dewey would have probably drifted apart long ago if they hadn't been connected by all the killings

But Gale should have been way more devastated. Gale and Dewey were given as much screen time as Sidney in Scream 2, and they even got their own theme song (though it was ripped from the Broken Arrow soundtrack). And in Scream 3 I would argue that Gale and Dewey were the primary protagonists

I get that having scenes of Gale and Sidney bawling over Dewey's casket would seriously slow the movie down, but they barely seemed fazed at all by his death. Didn't feel true to the characters at all

I agree.

Gale was in a relationship and seemed to still care about Dewey, so the way, at least, she reacted, I was convinced he had survived.

I wonder if it is supposed to be a reference to Han Solo dying in The Force Awakens and it not seeming like he got a proper farewell from Leia and Luke.

Gale showed emotion when she saw the body bag being rolled out

Was it more than a gasp?

reply

Maybe they were desensitized. They have been through this five times now. I feel bad for the Riley parents, first their daughter and now their son, both murdered in the same Ghostface killings (different killers I know)

It was off, but I think they did it that way for the reasons you stated, it would have slowed the movie down.
If they make a another movie, I think they will show the lasting impact it had on Gale especially.
Sidney would be more likely to get to her family and move on, but Gale will likely never get over it.
It would be corny as hell, but it wouldn't surprise me in a sequel if Cox returns that they dont bring David Arquette back as well in the form of flashbacks and visions for Gale like they did with Billy in this movie.
