wow, loved it
Yes, spoilers below.
Overall, very happy.
A few minor nitpicks, but really good. It kept me guessing and surprised. It felt new and different but I could still feel the influence of Wes Craven. It was very cleverly written, especially in the ways it was self-referential, as is the series' schtick.
Highly recommend.
I'm of course upset about Dewey, and Judy and her son. But I'm happy for Kirby being alive and Mark being in the picture.
I liked the twist of having the opening scene be not a kill at all, but an attack that is survived. That was an idea for Sidney at the beginning of 4 at one point.
I like that they didn't go out of their way to make the body count absurdly high just to keep with that trope. I felt it worked pleasingly. More suspense than gore. In fact, the original is the only one with a lower body count. Which I guess is another way of it being a reboot. Then in 6 they can up the ante and still have a lower body count than 4.
The killers did seem a bit obvious. I too scoffed at "six months." That only seems like a long time when you're young. And Amber was just plain creepy to begin with and controlling. And as soon as Tara was at her house, she had what she wanted, was so obvious when she and Richie kicked everyone else out. I kept wondering about others at times, but they were the ones I mostly suspected. I never thought Sam, since that's clearly the direction we were being pointed in. Never thought Tara or really Chad or Mindy. Never thought Wes. Briefly considered Liv but not seriously. Vince was too brief to be anything more than a red herring or make you consider Liv more. I did kind of think Tara. She and Amber, the first all-female team, could've been interesting. Or as a surprise third. But then we get to having six killers at some point haha, and how many people can realistically keep the secret?
My biggest problem with the killers was that their motive was a bit flimsy. But I guess that's sort of the point, with commenting on toxic fandom. Each of the previous movies, one of the killers had a very personal reason.
Also, funny, 3, which at one point was "the end of the trilogy," is now the mid-point of the series.
One thing I'm confused about. Tara's attack at the beginning. We see Amber being livestreamed. So presumably by Richie. Seems like Sam would make note he wasn't around when that happened.
Also, I feel like the end is interesting, that both sibling pairs survive, always a wild card with siblings
