Was Morris to the left of the Democratic Party?

I found myself agreeing word-for-word with him on his every progressive stance from the death penalty to religion.

But some things confused me. The Republicans were voting for Pullman in the Open Primary, because they believed he was less of an electoral threat than Morris, but surely a Democratic centrist would be more likely to win the general election than a candidate from the left.

In the UK, Tories were paying £5 membership fees to join Labour in order to vote for the far-left Corbyn in the leadership campaign on the basis that the public would be less likely to back a socialist for PM than a centre-left leader.

And my understanding is that US politics are roughly similar and that by-and-large, give or take 2016, Republicans tend to fear centrist candidates more than they fear 'wacky socialists' like 'Crazy Bernie'.

Or was the film saying that George Clooney is so gorgeous and charismatic that he could run on the Communist Manifesto and still win a general election?
