Good first act then becomes stupid, missed opportunity

First act of movie starts of really good, then in act 2 once it dwelves into the pregnancy crap it just gets stupid so many plot holes.

As a poltical movie I feel it could've been so much more.

It ramps up the drama a bit fast, but I think it does a nice job setting up the pregnancy at just the right (wrong) time for it to play into the central drama. You kind of need it because the story is otherwise just a junior player getting played.
