Dark, blurry and washed-out colors. Maybe they are trying to hide details of a lower production budget vs GOT?

The thing is that from what I've read HOTD is costing more per episode to make than GOT did. And yet as you say it only looks half as good. No matter how bad what was happening on screen in GOT was it always looked fantastic.

Interesting. So those things I griped about might just be a artistic choices.

I think so. Most of the first episode took place indoors and much of it at night where they seemed to be going for a "natural lighting" look, ie gloomy and grimy.
