Conceded much?

This show is okay.
Its way to long
and demetri thinks he is some god of comedy
sure some segments are funny but most of this show
is him doing absolutely nothing while the audience laughs to
boost his ego a little more.

reply

Eh, all comedians like hearing people laugh at their jokes.

But sometimes he does laugh along with them while they're actually laughing at the set-up, rather than the punch-line. And sometimes he does give the vibe like he thinks the current joke he's telling is just hilarious.

I only saw the first episode "Timing"... and it seemed that only about 1/2 of his drawings were at all funny. And most seemed like contrived attempts at his previous success with that shtick.

Additionally, a lot of his non-stand up sketches are either just horrible or just WAY too long. The actor that couldn't act angry on camera was one of the lamest, longest, most generically lame sketches I've seen in a while (not counting SNL... but they have the excuse that it's LIVE). And his "Guy that's way too early for a rave" would have been okay at about a quarter of the length of time AND if the footage of him dancing focused on all the people around him thinking he's crazy... rather than having virtually no one around him through most of it. And the ones that are, are simply walking passed as if he's just another crazy NYC dude.

I tihnk that was hilarious!!

conceited - amd it is probably more of an act/persona than what he is really like. Think Stephen Colbert. He plays a raging egomaniac, but we all know it is parody and not reflective of the real Stephen Colbert.

reply

Eh... Colbert's persona is an obvious farce. Demitri's ego and wanting to be relevant and consistently funny is definitely real.

If you listen to his commentary tracks on his comedy specials... especially the ones with his mom, you can tell by the way he talks about himself, each act and the way his mom talks about him... that he's pretty serious about himself.

I don't really care, personally. Doesn't make his comedy any better or worse... Just makes me think he'd be a pretty terrible celebrity/comedian to run into on the streets.

reply

What exactly did he concede?

reply

I believe the word you're looking for is "conceited".

And, yes, I agree with you that Demetri, while funny in spots on this show and on his comedy specials, thinks he's funnier than he actually is.

Still, rather watch this guy than Comedy Central's other "comic" show, Mind of Mencia.

reply

People have to stop using Mind of Mencia as the standard of comparison for comedy shows. "Carlos" Mencia is not a comedian.

reply

No, I don't think he conceded much. What the hell that "much" is you were talking about, I don't know.

He's a master of karate.....and friendship....for everyone!

reply

bahahaha fail on spelling

reply

So what, if he doesn't think he's funny he shouldn't have a job right now then, right? This thread is stupid.

reply

I've met Demetri after a show, and he stayed and talked to everyone that wanted to talk to him. Signed autographs, answered questions, etc.
He definitely did not come off as conceited - in fact he came off as a really nice and genuine guy.

How's he supposed to behave on his show though?
Should he act like the joke he's telling isn't funny, because I don't think comedy could work if comedians behaved that way - well, maybe it could, but it would just be a shtick and not genuine at all.

reply

admittedly some of the sketches arent all that funny, like the karate dude, but other parts are pretty funny. everyone's entitled to their opinions. i think dave chappelle is both extremely funny and annoying at the same time, while others may think he was a waste of television space and. i think its cool when he laughs with the audience, it makes telling the joke less -dry-. i approve demetri martin and his show :)

P.S. -conceded?.....conceited.
