Not 'intelligent' or 'smart' humor.

After attempting to watch this show twice I was in awe. How can a man with such dry, lame, and pathetic jokes get his own television show? Some people need to get over themselves because Demetri's humor is not intelligent or witty. It is crap, pure crap. This is coming from a college educated individual. Not only can I not even crack a smile while watching this show but it doesn't even fit into the "it's so bad it's funny" category. Firstly, it seems as if Demetri could not even stop to think about coming up with an original format for his show. Next, there's the jokes. They are BAD... B. A. D. He really thinks that he can win people over with random references and commentaries on every day activities? Tonight he explored the ways in which people exit conversations... and then went to the punch line of "I had to pee myself". Give me a break... urinating in your pants is not funny in the least bit. His sketches were even more pathetic. To those that like this show: you are not any more intelligent than anyone else. This humor is not going over anyone's head. It is just terrible comedy that Comedy Central rolled out... which they seem to do often. Along with Sarah Silverman, Carlos Mencia, and all those other crappy shows on the network, Demetri Martin's show is pure garbage. Thank God my remote was properly functioning after South Park or it would have been thrown through the screen of my television.

I'm sorry you feel that way. His humour isn't for everyone, just like every other comedian out there.

Personally, I object to it being called "smart" humor. Demetri himself has rejected that label.

I agree, this show is not funny. I'm in shock this show is on the air. It is atrocious. The sketches are just dumb. The saddest thing is, it really seems like he believes it's funny and ground-breaking. I don't think I laughed once. I saw one of the sketches where he gets into a fight over a fender bender with this other guy and it was so painfully unfunny, I was cringing as I was watching this. Like sucking air through a cavity. And then the disco bathroom? Is comedy central on crack? I love how they make it seem like the audience finds this hilarious, slap-your-knees snort-funny. There must have been some major sucking up behind the scenes of comedy cenral for this to be made into a weekly half-hour comedy show.

i think its great. its just not for everyone. no need to bash it just because you dont like it your self. its kinda sad. and liking it doesnt make anyone any more or less intelligent or anything on those lines. Demetri is funny some and not to others. Just like some people like sushi and some dont. why cant anyone leave it at that.

reply

I think it's because, like his comedy or not, Demetri has a proven intelligent. These whiny douches are threatened by that and it makes them feel better to try to drag him down. The OP seems to think he's "right" because he assumes smart people can't laugh at something like a simple joke, that it's "beneath" them somehow, that they could only be amused by something the meets their intellect. That just shows he doesn't know smart people nor does he know humor.

okay...I love Demetri's CD and his TV special "Person" was very funny, I'm a huge fan. However, I really can't stand his show. He's using the same formula over and over again and it's just getting too predictable. Granted, there are some things in each show I can laugh at, but the majority of it just seems stale.

I agree. I think the issue is that the comedy required for a sketch show is a lot different than his normal brand of comedy. He did an interview awhile ago where he said that his goal when writing material is to use the fewest words possible to tell a joke. I think his goal was around 5-6 words per joke. Sketch comedy is the opposite - he's expanding one idea into 3 or 4 minutes, and it doesn't work.

A second season might be better, if he's gotten used to the format.

Yeah but the simple fact is that it don't matter what any of you think. There was enough people that did think it was funny to get it on the air so they could enjoy it. I mean really if you want to get something canceled get off your azz and bitcch about tim and eric, great show. lol

I think you were mistaken in assuming that the show would consist of witty, high-brow humor. Observational humor, just like any other kind, can vary in it's level of complexity, and the jokes found on the show are indeed, rather shallow. I'm actually rather disappointed with the show, as I am a big fan of Demetri's stand-up, which I feel is genuinely clever, relatively cerebral humor; quite refreshing within the context of popular comedians. I will admit though, that his new show is significantly less funny, although I do still enjoy it to an extent.

This is coming from a college educated individual.

You really didn't need to tell us that because of the fierce intelligence of your critique. It doesn't get any more damning than, "this is crap, pure crap."

Many of the respondents to this thread actually did give valid reasons for why they don't care for it, and while I disagree, at least I can see where they are coming from.

I'm not crazy about all his skits, they're either hit or miss. But for the most part his jokes are good, like the actual stand up. If you've ever seen him do his routines before they're pretty good.

personally i think it would have been a complete waste to destroy a tv over some show, even a high school educated individual would find that stupid.

So what I'm getting from this is:

You are educated.
You do not like Demetri Martin's humor.
Therefore, only uneducated people find Demetri Martin funny.

...Nice thought process there.

*Well I don't mind if you don't mind...
