The prison system doesn't work the way it's portrayed in this movie. There is corruption, but it's quite hidden and the only time you experience a violent attack is when you really have it coming (i.e. snitching).
I worked inside a prison for about a year and I know what the reality is. Truthfully, there's more violence outside of prison than inside, this movie is basically just Hollywood fiction.

The corruption stuff was indeed nonsense. However, there are definitely prisons that are even more violent than the depiction in this film. For example, in 2004 alone Feltham Prison guards were subject to 195 violent assaults. There are some none too awful prisons and some incredibly violent prisons.
