Literally shocked that a film like this came out in 2008...

... in today's political climate.

I have no idea how this movie passed. The movie's message is good, as it talks about how important the Castle Doctrine is, but these ideas are becoming grossly unpopular today.

I'm also surprised about this movie's take on race, and how doesn't show PC mixed race gangs like it does in Spiderman or the Green Hornet. But the craziest thing is that the Blacks and Spanish are the bad guys in this movie. Of course, the white guys are bad too, but in Hollywood most Black bad guys are shown as victims of their bad circumstances (racism and poverty) that turned them bad.

It's not like American History X where the White Anti-Hero goes through an anti-racist cleansing in Jail. The other way around. The main character becomes an Aryan Brother to protect himself, and the audience is supposed to sympathize with that. That kind of thing is a complete taboo today.

How on earth was it ever approved?

reply

Um, because it shows reality? Not everybody likes to be spoon fed the left-wing fairy tales churned out by Hollywood.

And who's to say castle law isn't popular? Anything else requires people to adhere to an unrealistic and over-lawyerly code of conduct in a life threatening situation and loses sight of who the real good guys and bad guys are. Nobody should go to prison for killing a criminal in self defense. End of story.

I know it's realistic, and I know that the Castle Law is right. It's just that in this day and age, everything is practically REQUIRED to be a left-wing PC fairy tale. There had to have been some kind of protest when this movie came out.

That's a good point and probably part of the reason that it was such a limited release.
That and the studio (stage6) had never made a "serious" good movie before.

...and it saddens me.

Amazing film. Possibly the best movie set in prison I've seen yet. Prison flicks don't go theatrical these days, but I'm shocked it wasn't even nominated for anything.
