so have i got this right...
they originally wanted to get the tapes for the inmates fighting for the guards but the tapes were ejected/erased and that wasnt going to work...
so it was just lucky that the good warden pressed play when he did?

Gordon got involved, and somehow got to the "good" warden and let him know that they needed to secure the tape to uncover what Jackson was doing. Remember, Gordon was a corrections officer (he told Dorff character that he watched Val Kilmer character for 20 years and Kilmer character actually saved his life).
sharestill though, as in any movie, some things are "lucky"
