Prison Inmate Number On Their Back - 4A1L (Fail?)

I may be looking to deep into this, but those letters/numbers... "4A1L".. sure seems like someones attempt at comedy by trying to interpret the word "FAIL".

Surely I am not the only one that noticed this? Just a funny thought I guess. Or maybe not...

What Kind Of Supreme Being Condones Such Irony?

Always made me think of "JAIL" instead for some reason.

reply

I too thought of FAIL. Funny.

I thought also of FAIL but was really unsure of the intent. It could be jail also. But why distract the viewer with a cryptic message on their backs when there's a more important storyline we should be concentrating on?

here's your answer. the budget was so small for this movie that they had to find deals wherever they could. the happened on some costumes from another movie, and they actually had the word jail screened on them. because this was supposed to tale place in prison, they altered the word jail to look like some kind of block number.
awesome ovie to be on though.

I don't believe this is at all true.

1) The budget for this movie was almost 3 million dollars...plenty for a few yellow jumpsuits.
2) The alpha-numeric designation of 4A-1L was clearly printed, fresh, and not altered.
3) There was a hyphen between the A and the 1 and the spacing between them was too large for it to have said JAIL...it would have looked like JA IL.
4) At the end of the movie, when the young skinhead who passed the shank to Wade Porter is placed in a new cell, his jumpsuit says 4A-1R.

I do believe the designation was meant to look like the word FAIL. Interestingly, as I mentioned above, when the young skinhead gets tossed in a new cell with an inmate who wants to kill him, his designation says 4A-1R... as in FAIR. I believe this is meant represent that that his doomed fate is just that...FAIR. He's getting what he deserves.

Typically with "leet" or 1337 speak, a 4 in an A so it doesn't really work out.
