My thoughts and observations (SPOILERS)

This movie STINKS! This is the first sword and shield movie that I struggled to finish. The vikings in the story were portrayed as primitive tribal people who danced around the campfire and howled like wolves. Everybody was so dirty and the environment was so dismal.

There was also too much primitive spirituality throughout the film. The quest for the magic sword tricked me into thinking this was a fantasy epic and they showed disturbing rituals performed by Shamans. Christianity was spreading in the Viking world during this time so it would have been accurate for the film to depict the spreading influence of Christianity.

Viewers don't get to know the main character since the director spent too much time showing the natives dancing around the campfire doing various rituals.

I think this director wanted to show the negative aspects of viking life so he featured slavery,
animal sacrifice, shamanism and savagery. Eggers said in an interview that he wanted to take Norse mythology back from right-wing extremist groups but he is taking a dump on a people who are admired by many ordinary people. I've always admired viking culture and I am not a right-wing extremist. I could only watch ten minutes of the Lighthouse before turning if off so I will not be checking out any other Eggers films.
