Insane

Watched it last night and couldn't help shaking my head at the stupidity of some people. Selling poisonous snakes?!?! A freaking puff adder! Keeping lions as pets?!?! And the (I'm assuming) fathers with their small kids at those auctions or shows, etc buying snakes for them? How many times do we need to hear about a child attacked by the exotic family pet before people wise up?

Some people don't use the brain the good Lord gave them. I'm not a huge animal rights fanatic by any means..I eat meat, etc but those animals are not domesticated. They aren't meant to be pets...they need to be in the wild in their own indigenous habitats. I felt so bad for Lambert and his female companion being in that small trailer...and then seeing how Lambert died was heart-wrenching.

I just don't get why people would look to those exotic, wild animals for pets when there are so many dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc looking for homes.

The venomous snake selling is INSANE.

Snakes are way worse than big cats because people release those darn things and they end up taking over and are unstoppable. The united states is undersiege right now especially since the hurricane. All sorts of snakes got released. Atleast with a big cat theres a little conservation there and they won't end up taking over the united states any time soon. Really sad about the chimps and everything because you just know they rip them from their families. I'm glad the governor did something about it. I still think that with some regulation and strict rules and guidelines owning a big cat should be legal. If you have a good amount of property, and the funds and some type of required training you should be able to own one. Of course you shouldn't be breeding them though. Too bad big cats end up being the poor mans ferrari.

Read this very carefully and you might have a revelation.

Why would I choose an exotic pet over dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs?

BECAUSE I WANT ONE.

I am an individual with my own desires. You have different desires than me. We are different. I like exotic pets. You only like boring domesticated animals. Therefore, you do not buy exotic pets...and I do.

Okay if a big dog doesn't attack people, or animals like house cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, bearded dragos etc do no realy have the means to kill people does that make them a boring pet? Or is it because they are easier to get?

reply

Where did I say that non-boring pets kill people? I have no pets that can kill people.

I am asking you if that is the reason or if it is because animals reguarly kept are too easy to get.

reply

The reason is because domesticated pets have boring, predictable behaviors and personalities that everyone is familiar with, and more times than not low intelligence, as human selective-breeding aims for so that they are 'placid' and effortless to care for. Been there done that. I can't bare to look at them sometimes.

Look it depends how much you put into an animal. All animals have what it is needed to survive. To say they are smarter than domesticated animals (like dogs) is an assumption. Yes, some dogs have alot of energy that they need to burn off. However, take a puppy and work with it daily and you can teach it stuff.

Science is saying dogs can read people better then other animals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTTuiE1_Oe8

If you think about it wild canines and wolves probably have the ability to read its prey and be able to select the animal that is weak or sick. But no wolf can be a police or military canine.

Now, not only do I own a dog I own a green cheek conure (and am looking forward to getting a mini macaw). Birds, though kept as pets still have their wild side and require dedication. However, spend time with that bird everyday you can train it tricks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unO5whIUF-M

I tamed my bird and am now working on getting her use to the flight harness and will work on potty training.I have heard people enjoy their bearded dragons and would take it outsided on a harness when the weather was nice. This can also apply to other big lizards. A lizard named MacGyver (a tegu) has a fan base http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMcHWaMxNWg

Ferrets are fearless but are usually kept as pets because they are funny and full of energy. Yes, they have short attention spans but in the wild a polecat is probably on the go for it's prey. If someone spends alot of time with a guiene pig it can be a sweet and gentle pet. I am now curious what you keep since you claim your animal is smart and can not kill a human.

reply

Well see we obviously care about different things. If I were into training animals I certainly wouldn't be into exotics, I would be into dogs. Actually, birds are entirely exotic animals as are lizards. The word 'exotic' doesn't mean something uncommon like an elephant or monkey, but animals that aren't domesticated and often even a few that are but people still see them as not, like ferrets. Birds are actually more demanding than most people really.

Yes, birds are demanding but they can also be trained. I never personaly owned a reptile and my interaction with ferrets is through people I know that have them. And yes birds are classified as exotics so I have every reason to fear how other people with exotics (of whatever kind) behave and what they do. Or if they are reckless with a deadly animal and thus giving groups like Peta ammunition (and they are a group that would go after dogs too). Some states have laws that unfairly ban ferrets.

GSmith, please try to stop dominating every thread, it's disruptive and inconsiderate to the rest of us. Thank you.

Is there some kind of rule saying that I can't post a certain number of posts, dumbass? Don't like what I'm writing, go whine to the mods and they'll determine what's 'inconsiderate'. I can assure you that my posts won't be removed...well, maybe except this one, because I called you a dumbass. But why should I hide the truth?

ALL of your posts are rude and confrontational, I'm not the first person you've acted like a jackass to.

reply

It doesn't matter. Your post was completely absurd. I have every right to post frequently and be confrontational. There are a lot of idiots that need to be treated rudely.

I find the "Ignore User" setting much more effective than asking somebody to stop, or change their posting practices. Absent posting prohibited expression with actual malice, what harm does one (or, hundreds - where my ignore list tops 170) poster do if you quietly, and effectively, remove their comments from your feed by using the ignore function?

The level of discourse is so varied that judicious use of that function produces a much cleaner exchange.
