My reaction to the trailer...
...Mixed-to-good.
I can't say I'm CRAZY about the earwax joke, but compared to some of the other grossness that infests kids' movies, it's fairly tame. So is the bit with the toilet...it's not scatological.
And yes, they've increased the slapstick for this scene, but it's not as if the original books didn't have their share of slapstick. Would wallpapering oneself into a room, getting dragged around by a power mower and getting it stuck up a tree, or accidentally sawing a kitchen table in half be out of place for the Three Stooges?
So I'm not quite as down on those moments as some others are, but I'm not madly in love with them, and I do hope that the tone of the movie's not going to be like that. Fortunately, there's reason to believe it won't be...many early trailers cherry-pick wacky or over-the-top moments that really aren't very indicative of the movie as a whole. Look at the first trailer for Frozen, for example. Or 2009's A Christmas Carol...the trailer made it look like they'd turned it into a wacky comedy, but the actual movie, between those few-and-far-between moments, was one of the darkest, most book-faithful adaptations around.
Then there's the fact that Michael Bond, though initially skeptical of a live-action movie, was won over by five minutes of footage, has given his seal of approval, and has filmed a cameo.
The trailer's pluses? I like the look of Paddington overall. He seems to have the same proportions as the original illustrations. I like his eyes and his facial expressions. I like the way he tips his hat to passersby (very Paddington) and the way he misunderstands the sign (VERY Paddington). That gives me hope that the writers do get Paddington.
Let's hope that there'll be other trailers that spotlight the more understated, book-faithful moments as well as Paddington's interaction with his human co-stars (ESPECIALLY Peter Capaldi's Mr. Curry!).
