Flashback of the father

Okay so in the beginning of the movie hes teaching the bears english and they speak it and he was amazed nobody is too shocked with a bear speaking in the movie, but in the flashback they make fun of him and say do the bears speak english he says no, but shouldn't he have said yes they said london?

I wondered about that myself. Maybe they meant "did they speak English when you met them?"

Still, that scene was well worth it for "Do they play cricket?!" and "Geographers...turn your backs!"

I think he meant that they don't speak the language fluently, or that they soeak very little of it. There's a scene where Paddington said he didn't know the explorer's (human) name, only his bear name. The bears couldn't have known a lot of English if they couldn't even manage Captain Clyde's name.
