His aunt and uncle have English names already.

Ok, so its a bit of a loophole. He pronounces his original name as a growl. In the books, his own name was just too difficult to pronounce (but still a word), hence the decision to call him Paddington.

Yet, he refers to his aunt and uncle by their names, in English. I can only assume they had names that were pronounceable in English, whereas his name is a growl?

They changed it up a bit for the movie, but in the movie all their names were a growl - not just Paddington - and the explorer was even given a growl name, or at least referred to with a growl.

I believe that his Aunt and Uncle had bear-growl names but Paddington was also familiar with the English names given to them by the explorer i.e. Pastuzo and Lucy - remember that the explorer (in the movie at least) renamed them so they would have still had original bear-growl names before the explorer showed up and were not born "Lucy" and "Pastuzo."

Paddington didn't meet the explorer so he was never given an English name by the explorer, and apparently his uncle and aunt didn't seem the need to give him an English name either.

Oddly enough, Paddingon only knew the explorer's bear-growl equivalent name so apparently Pastuzo and Lucy continued to use the explorer's bear-growl name as well as referred to him as "The Explorer", but kept using their own English names.

At the beginning of the book series (if I remember correctly) Paddington claimed that his Peruvian name was hard to pronounce and so he was given his English name, but he didn't have a bear-growl name like the movie. In a later book it is revealed that his name is Pastuso (not sure why it wasn't Pastuzo like his uncle).

For the audience's sake (which would include younger kids who need to follow the movie) it seems more natural to refer to them as Uncle Pastuzo and Aunt Lucy throughout. But they still wanted Mrs. Brown to name him Paddington so he had to still have an unpronounceable name. I don't think they could have gone with Pastuso since that isn't quite difficult to pronounce after all, and they used the bear-growl thing as a joke for the movie.

Exactly. I think they made a good call--to have Paddington claim his Peruvian name was "too hard to prounounce" (Pastuso isn't so hard to pronounce!) and have the Browns give him a "better" English name would have had all sorts of unfortunate implications in today's world.

(Although it might've worked just as nicely if Paddington had said, "My name is Pastuso, after my uncle, but Aunt Lucy said I should have a new English name for my new life in England. Besides, 'Pastuso' means 'slow-moving', and I'm really not that slow-moving...")

I guess Paddington's aunt and uncle, getting the hang of English and liking it so much, chose to stick with their English names in their family circle.

I always wondered why Bond chose that name especially since he makes a point to say it's hard to pronounce and then much later on they say it's Pastuso. Though I suppose it's possible when he wrote the first book he wanted him to be renamed Paddington and gave the excuse without having a particular "difficult" name in mind.

LOL, yes!

Before I started seeing trailers and saw the movie, this is how I thought they would have handled it, but they went with the bear-growl joke instead, and that was cute.

He is speaking English to the Browns so of course he uses his aunt and uncle's English names. It's common sense, not a loop-hole.
