Doctor Who fans...

As an adult, I figured the movie might be "enjoyable enough" and heard enough things about it that I was semi-interested and figured I might get around to watching it someday. Was doing stuff on my computer and often load a movie in the background. Didn't see anything terribly interesting on my movie site... so figured "what the heck, let's see what the fuss was about" since I'd heard quite a few good things about the movie.

It was one of those deals where I wasn't really planning on watching it so much as just having it in the background while I do something else... but very early in the movie, I just started watching it. And I couldn't stop! And I didn't want it to end either. So far as "kid's movies" are concerned, I'm sure I enjoyed this more than the Wallace and Gromit movies and I think I might have liked it even more than Pixar's Up.

But then when the movie was over... I sorta thought about something else. I didn't know Peter Capaldi was even in the movie, to be honest. When I saw him show up my eyes lit up huge though because... DOCTOR-FREAKING-WHO! When he was on-screen I enjoyed him and all... but in spite of how great he was... I didn't really want to see more of him because he was pretty much an ancillary character and I liked the rest of the movie so much. That sorta blew my mind after-the-fact. Make no mistake, I LOVE DOCTOR WHO.

So, my question for other fans of Doctor Who that watched this is what did you think of Capaldi? Did you want to see more of him? Did he distract you from the rest of the movie even?

Just sorta curious.

I loved him in the part. He was just right as the bumbling neighbor. I thoughourly enjoyed the entire cast.

I had no clue he was in the film til I saw him pop out the window. It put a great big smile on my face, and loved when he tipped the family off with where Paddington ended up

I personally thought he was great and that his part wasn't big enough!

Also, I honestly thought he was gping to turn out to be Montgomery (Nicole Kidman's dad).

I agree on wanting to see more of Mr. Curry. Even as a kid reading the books, I used to wonder, "what made him the way he was?" It would be interesting to mine the character in a way the books never really did--is he a widower? Did an early sorrow cause his harshness and unpleasantness? Is his penny-pinching caused by childhood poverty? (Seems likely, given that around the time he'd have been born the Notting Hill area was far rougher.) I'd like to see an actor of Peter Capaldi's caliber given a chance to show his chops by showing more to the character. Plus, there are certainly worse lessons to teach Paddington--and the kids watching him--than "don't judge somebody or write them off until you've thought about what made them."
