Is the humor in this movie...

...cheap laughs, site gags, stupid humor, kind of like in "Anchorman" or "Dodgeball" or is it humor that's more clever and original, like in Christopher Guest movies or Wes Anderson movies? How would you classify the humor?

reply

very stupid, very much like anchorman and dodgeball, only not as good. A few funny moments that were great, but the vast majority of the film was DULLLLLLLLL

"I yearn for you tragically. A. T. Tappman, Chaplain, U.S. Army."

reply

It is like the humor in Dodgeball and Anchorman, but a little more clever/high-brow. However, those movies were much funnier. The laughs were kind of middling and most didn't work. It was disappointing, because I had much higher expectations.

It really depends on the person viewing though. I found all of it funny because living in Arizona (not Tuscon), I have had previous classes where no one listens, and you can see the anger gather in the teachers face. Also I connected with Steve's character because I'm a student film maker in college, and trying to find people who are actually serious in this state is like running for president... no one listens to you and no one takes the craft seriously. It was fun to see the character suffer through what most of us here have to deal with.

Well, I didn't really think Anchorman and Dodgeball were funny, except the scene in Anchorman where the newscasters battle it out. I might've thought those movies were funny when I was like 11, but I just mostly find them totally stupid. I like Christopher Guest, Wes Anderson, Michael Bright (Freeway), Terry Zwigoff (Bad Santa, Ghost World). I was hoping this comedy would be more like those, in originalty, but I guess it's not.

reply

I'd say its a combination.

The funniest part was the reveal of the Theater Critic and "Eric Brokovitch" as a highschool play. The rest was good too.

All in all, I'd say the humor was too too subtle. Subtle humor works fine in The Life Aquatic, and obvious humor works in Tropic Thunder, but this one seemed to miss the mark with most people. I happened to be in the frequency this movie was written in though, so I loved it.

I don't think the previous posters have seen a Wes Anderson movie.

This is subtle. You have to listen to the words of the songs and look at the props the set designers have placed around the rooms.

reply

I think it's kind of both. Very clever at times, but with some slapstick too. I think it's more blatantly funny than Christopher Guest or Wes Anderson movies. Hope that last statment made sense...

reply

The humor is just as stupid as it is in those films, the only difference is that those films know they're stupid comedies and don't try to be anything else, this is being sold as the art house version of that, LOL this is about as art-house as Terrence Malick being commercial.

reply

hell no it isn't anchorman humor.
heres the thing, i saw this in a theater with like 4 other people. and when steve coogan turns around with his hilarious face and gives a hilarious speech that doesn't make sense, and no one laughed. he fainted, someone in the movie asked "is he acting?" (as in the trailer) and the other guy said "no he's not that good" and everyone cracked up.
i dont get it. my theater laughed at only the physical comedy, like the trash can into the mute girl. i didnt think that was funny. but the awkwardness of steve coogan is what made me laugh throughout the whole thing. i cant think of another movie where just facial expressions and the awkwardness of the whole thing make it hilarious..

Lots of totally ridiculous stuff like Anchorman, lots of non-verbal humor like Napoleon Dynamite, and a bit of witty humor like Little Miss Sunshine.

We all deserve to die. Even you, Mrs. Lovett, even I.

I think it was a clever mix of a little bit of everything. I loved David Arquettes character, it was hilarious, and he did nothing really. Also, it the subtleties of Steve Coogan had me bursting into laughter. Also, LOVED Elizabeth Shue, and the whole point of the movie in general. It had a message. And the fact that Coogan's Character thought his own play had a message, made it that more hilarious. I liked the format of the movie, into acts. And the blatant racism, was funny because it was racism as the joke, but the joke was that his uniformedness(word?) and lack of racial understanding, just made himself look like a complete dumb ass. Was a great spoof movie of those inspirational teacher movies like Mr.Hollands Opus, Dangerous Minds, Lean On Me, and "I've got to reeeach these keeeds".

Well I thought this was an uneven mix, which is why it's such a bad movie.

reply

I wouldn't even classify it as anything. It's its own genre.

I thought it was a documentary.

reply

Yes it's continuing the Dogma 95 manifesto

reply

I'd say a mix of both, which makes it pretty uneven at times, but there are some very funny moments.

It's made from bits of real panther, so you know it's good...

reply

It's not at all the dry wit of Christopher Guest or Wes Anderson but it dealt with the possible cruder elements in a more mature fashion. For instance Steve Coogan's character is mocked by his wife for having a low sperm count and it's a serious issue for couples therefore it becomes an acceptable plot point as well as a humorous moment.

The humour definitely tried being a cross between Anchorman and Waiting for Guffman...tried too hard maybe. I don't think it was as funny as either of those movies.

reply

I think it was very clever. First it was a parody, borderline satire, that a lot of people didn't pick up on. Secondly the subtext was great throughout. I think it is smarter than people realize. For the people who only understood the one liners they probably didn't like Arrested Development either.

reply

I LOVE Arrested Development....Hamlet 2 just didn't cut it. To each their own though.
