shareI thought it was actually Peter O'Toole as well but after hearing Coogan do Jeremy Irons in the film so brilliantly, I believe it could be Coogan doing an impersonation.....
shareI agree that Peter O'Toole is probably the one he sounds most like when doing that voice, I have no idea if that's intentional or not.
Point is, there's no "could be" or "maybe" about it -- it IS Steve Coogan. That's not really a point of debate, but of course it's funny to hear who people *thought* it was before they knew. ;-)
it is steve coogan talking in his normal voice if you have seen anything else he has done like lan parttridge or sunshine you would know that he is english and sounds like that normally
i think it just added to the parody, that he narrated for his own character. but...my son and i did think he sounded a bit "like" tim curry and alan rickman (even when doing his jeremy irons impression...but we are not so familiar with his voice). maybe it's partly just the deep voice and that particular British accent? at the beginning--"to live is to act"--it seemed quite obvious that it was Steve Coogan, but as the movie progressed and we'd been listening to his American accent, the narrator's interjections made us think of someone distinguished, not the goofy drama teacher!!!
but there is no "narrator" in the credits.
One more for an uncredited Peter O'Toole, or Coogan doing an incredibly accurate Peter O'Toole.
shareIt's totally Coogan. He doesn't sound quite like that in real life...he sounds a little bit like Alan Partridge, but less extreme. I agree with the Peter O'Toole and Jeremy Irons comments - spot on! "To act is to live"..."I'm having a herpes outbreak right now!" Too funny. No way it was Coogan, he so lacks the depth and richfull tones! I bet it was Jeremy Irons! In fact I am really really convinced it was Jeremy!

Reality's overrated, I agree. But it's still Steve Coogan doing the narration.

AF: It’s Steve.
AE: Oh is it? It’s impossible to find anywhere.
AF: I forgot to put it in the credits, frankly. He’s doing his best Jeremy Irons with maybe a little Ian McKellen thrown in. That was the idea because he references him.

That is who I thought it was --- Alan Rickman.
It was Coogan...picked up on it right away. He's English, you know.
