I loved the visuals and music but extremely poor writing. I dont get it? almost in every scifi movie villain is about to take over the entire World and human race but in the end some dude save it from destruction by committing suicide.
Independence day, Prometheus, Armageddon, Spcae Cowboys and many more.
Why is it so difficult to write short term goals, or something more close to the character? artificial intelligence behaving like a street thug. Bad direction bad writing.
It's called sacrifice. Giving yourself up to save the people you care about.
The father in INDEPENDENCE DAY proves to his children, to the people of Earth, and most importantly to himself, that he is not a worthless drunk. That his life has meaning. And he defines it by literally saving the planet.
In ARMAGEDDON, one of them had to die. Instead of watching the man your daughter loves die at a young age, you choose to take his place, giving your daughter the love of her life, and once again saving the world in the process.
SPACE COWBOYS, same thing. An added bonus was that he was dying anyway. So you can choose to die in a hospital bed, slowly withering away to nothing, or you can die saving the world. If you know you're number's up anyway, why wouldn't you try and do good by the world you're leaving behind?
Didn't see PROMETHEUS yet, so don't spoil it for me.
It's not bad writing, it's excellent writing. It's noble to die for what you believe in. And it matters a lot to the people you die FOR.

That was a FLUKE. He didn't know his crashing into the City Destroyer's firing pin would cause the whole ship to overload and burst into flames, no-one did. It's a good job it did, to be honest. At best, he wasn't a martyr, he was an accidental hero.
Did you not see the original Tron. Its a certified tech demo with a very thin story. But still enjoyable for what it is. And is also a very unique film. The writing isn't great in Legacy. But its actually an improvement compared to its predecessor. Tron was never really about shakespearean writing than it was about atmosphere of the film itself. But i don't think sacrifice oneself in cinema is a bad thing or makes a movie bad. It kinda depends on what one is sacrificing themselves for that make it awful. I think Flynn sacrificing for his son is fine. Its not anything that a lot fathers would do for there sons if they had too. Pa Kent committing suicide by tornado over the paranoid fear that some people arent ready for Superman. Was dumb beyond belief. He f##king Superman. They cant catch him. Let alone Kill him.
What did you expect? The whole movie was built on cliches (absentee father, rebellious youth with abandonment issues, evil A.I. trying to break into the real world etc). I'm not that crazy about the original Tron either, but at least that one was imaginative and unique for its time. This was just another derivative, cookie-cutter sci-fi actioner that lifted its ideas from every major blockbuster in the past 20 years (Star Trek '09, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings etc).
