Why I Agree w/EW: This is one of the 10 Best of 2009
This film was disquieting. This is another film of his outside his more commercial films that takes a chance, and it does something most films don't today, except foreign films, it makes you think: extrapolate psychological, sociological, economic, etc. theories.
I’m glad he creates these films, as I liked “Bubble” as well.
I was struck by how correctly the flatness of Chelsea resonated, even if you aren’t a call-girl, there were aspects of her actions that woman use in the business world all the time. And, the assumption that she was stupid was sadly amusing. The suggestions she buy gold, which as it turns out is another economic strategy to float funding and profits to the 1-5%, when it appeared she had a good grasp of money and how to get the most for her money, a recycling of the bargaining process she engaged in through her career choice was fascinating. And, the juxtaposition of her boyfriend, who was a whore, while I would argue she was not, was ironic. The men in the plane who were roaches of society, aka Wall Street, were so gruesome in their greed and putting the debt upon the taxpayer, and fixating on Obama, who turned out to be their new BFF, was intriguing.
Finally, her belief in finding “the one” is typical, no matter what your profession.
There were elements of feminism; misogyny; capitalism at its worst, hope, the flat affect that happens when society doesn’t approve of either a) your career choice, or b) how you work and behave within the context of your career choice; the disease of a group mentality; the loneliness of trying to be who you are…… I could go on, but won’t.
A very compelling, thought-provoking film. And, kudos to the woman who played Chelsea. She did a fantastic job.
