I just saw the movie for the second time, and was also thinking, it seems to me these characters are younger than the actors playing them... maybe in their late 20s or early 30s, not late 30s like Phoenix and Paltrow are. Of course, if I didn't know their real age, they both would probably seem fine to me, cause they both look younger than they are, specially Paltrow, she could've passed for a 30-year-old in this movie.

Joaquin was 34 when this was released.

They were in their 30s but acting like 20s, according to the director, he said in a interview:

"I know that there are a significant percentage of people who are in their 30s and live with their parents."..."These characters needed to be the ages they are—if they were 20 years old, then the essence of the story would be homogenized pap, because you wouldn’t get a sense that their struggle was one of life and death."

...and he's right, i'm 31 and live with my mother, i can relate with their strugle.

Well said. By you, and the director...lol.

You're f-d in the head. You're young I expect, and crave for movies that speak to you like this one does. News Flash: Its not age, youth or "cuteness"......the quality of a human being doesn't have an age nor a mirror.

This, so much this.

Sorry but the OP's idea must be one of the worst i've ever read.

Bad idea.

It was important to Gray that the characters be in their 30's as opposed to their 20's. The maturity of the characters makes a satisfactory resolution more important. They should be settled and are not.
If they were 20 something, they would have time to make their mistakes and choices that won't impact their futures.
They still have time.

A person in his/her 30's has, or should have reached a milestone in life
.
That creates an urgency in their choices.

Excellent points!

Urgency. TWO LOVERS makes my skin crawl.

So well done. The mise en scene PERFECT.

All down to the stroke of midnight new years eve setting.

Like clocks ticking urgency.

Leonard struggling hurrying to open the champagne box.

Sometimes I see film become a painting, like certain shots. This film had a lot of that. Like when Leonard is sinking into the bay in ACT ONE

Another film that does that, but more obviously, ANTICHRIST

Gray's work is very painterly, indeed.

True. Joaquin seemed too old for this role in my opinion.

A remake sounds great, because it should have had far younger actors to begin with. They were all so immature.. or did I miss the point. Were they supposed to be really young or really immature or something? They acted like kids.

reply

They were at an age when they should have been more settled.
It gave an urgency to the desperate quest for love and normalcy.

20 somethings are expected to still be finding their place in the world.
The pressures increases with age.
