Very Underrated

I get it many so called sophisticated movie goers love to act like they don't enjoy simple entertainment especially cheesy fantasy romance films like Twilight. Boy has the hate on this film and the franchise as a whole been a whole fad to itself. Usually I also can't stand cheesy chick flicks like The Vow, The Notebook etc but Twilight is a different beast. While yes at its core its a romance story but beneath the surface there is more to it.

Twilight is not just a romance flick aimed at teens but also a beautiful fantasy flick that can be enjoyed by anyone open minded. I can't help but wish I lived in forks every-time I watch it. The cinematography is just beautiful and I personally find the characters likable. Bella is a beautiful but awkard chick and I like that she wasn't some mary sue character that a lot of female leads are nowadays. The characters IMO come across very natural and relatble. Also the score in this film is beautiful as well and when you combine it with the beautiful cinematography you have a beautiful fantasy flick to be enjoyed.

I have always loved this film. It's not in my top favorites and I don't care at all for the love story but there are some things to enjoy and I personally feel the film is very underrated.

I like that she wasn't some mary sue character

Actually, she is. Everyone talks about how beautiful she is. The Cullens love her. The werewolves love her. Everything revolves around her and her life.

I will agree with you about the musical score and much of the background scenery of all the films but

-- Bella is a beautiful --

She was not described so in the books and the films got that spot on.

Actually, she was. Bella might not have done so, but like I said, all the other characters did.

reply

Yes but the books clearly stated otherwise, including the other characters. Edward never even said it, nor in any of the films, Jacob never said it either.

Again, only Bella in the books says she's not beautiful.

Everyone else says other wise. Heck, she's got several guys all after her who want to date her.

reply

Why go so far from the description in the books, they didn't with Edward or Jacob. They were both described as gorgeous and to many they were. I have said this a million times the only reason I ever started was because of Robert, I thought he was simply gorgeous in these, couldn't act or deliver a line to save his life but..............I suppose to each their own.

-- Heck, she's got several guys all after her who want to date her. --
Aside from the obvious, that is what makes these stories pretty unbelievable.

I agree. But only because Bella's such a terrible, manipulative person, not because of her looks.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

If everyone, which I don't see or hear is acting though she is the most beautiful creature to walk the Earth, she was not described that way in the book, why deviate from that.

-- But only because Bella's such a terrible, manipulative person, not because of her looks. --
To me she comes off as a whiny child who could not embrace the opportunity she had. Even when she was suppose to have 'grown up' during the course of the films/books she still made childish decisions.

That is why I hate some authors, they change or allow their original material to be changed so much to please the masses. Sometimes its only small details and other times its stuff like this. She was described as plain and unattractive then the movie comes along and she is suppose to be a goddess, {personally I think Kristin is pretty ugly}, that was the whole basis, she did not understand why Edward wanted her, and that is mentioned in the second film I think, or the first I don't recall right off.

Yes, she was.

She wasn't described that way. Bella may have thought that about herself, but all the other characters contradicted her. The majority of the characters say and act as if she's beautiful. The majority of the description in the book is not about her being plain and unattractive at all. It's about how attractive she actually is.

That being the case, the movie did not deviate at all. Bella is attractive. She's just the only one who doesn't see it. Until she becomes a vampire. Then all of a sudden she is attractive. Even though the only thing that changes is that she becomes paler, the very thing she didn't like about herself in the beginning of the books.

OK we must have read different books.

-- The majority of the characters say and act as if she's beautiful. --
No, neither Edward nor Jacob ever said she was pretty until she was turned and even then only Edward said it. It was always just these two hot guys fighting over her for no good given reason. I looked at it from a more adult POV, which Meyer was and should have written it as, their fighting over Bella was just an excuse for other problems. Not the love of her.

-- She's just the only one who doesn't see it. --
She isn't the only one who doesn't see it, I don't. Nor did I understand it to be otherwise when I read my copies of the book.

-- Even though the only thing that changes is that she becomes paler, --
Along with 20 tons of caked on makeup, fake eyelashes, new hairstyle and a whole new wardrobe. Yeah when she becomes a vampire she is then suppose to be beautiful which is described in my books.

So why do they, and other boys at the school, want to date her? It's not just Edward and Jacob.

She isn't the only one who doesn't see it, I don't.

But you're not a character in the books.

Yeah when she becomes a vampire she is then suppose to be beautiful which is described in my books.

Exactly. And she has not physically changed at all. Further cementing she's beautiful. Meyer's just a bad writer and couldn't properly convey Bella being unattractive other than with Bella not knowing what Edward saw in her.

Except for what I mentioned.

There I agree, but more than that she took other ideas and didn't know what to do with them.

Yeah why?

Physical attraction. There's really nothing else. Well, Edward thought she was a mystery because he can't read her mind. But it doesn't change what a horrible person she is. So it definitely can't be her personality.

Except for what I mentioned.

The make up? Clothes? Those aren't actual physical changes that come with vampirism. Those can be obtained by anyone with money.

Bella felt she was beautiful just by becoming a vampire. That was it for her. Not with the make up and clothes. In fact, she points out several times she doesn't like the Cullens just giving her those things. Though she'll gladly take them.

-- The make up? Clothes? Those aren't actual physical changes that come with vampirism. --
Right, so in order for her to be beautiful she musta bought it all, cause she didn't start out that way.

-- she points out several times she doesn't like the Cullens just giving her those things. --
Yes another major writing flaw, any vampire could have given her that. I always had the idea if she had wanted it bad enough Laurent would have turned her if she had asked, there I am talking about decisions that were poorly made.

Yeah I think these tales had all the good ingredients but the author just messed it all up, and they fixed nothing in the films.

Still love it though.

Except vampirism was enough for her to consider herself beautiful.

Heck, any of the other Cullens would've done it. They all seemed up for it. Edward was the only hesitant one.

they fixed nothing in the films.

I disagree. They fixed two things: One, the kiss that bordered on sexual assault. The movie has it as a quick kiss before Bella punches Jacob and he's sorry. The books description is far worse. It's a long kiss with Jacob forcibly holding the back of her head and pressing his body against hers. Then practically laughing when she breaks her hand after punching him.

Two, Charlie. Charlie is my favorite character in the entire series and a genuinely kind and loving father to Bella, but the books have him do incredibly stupid things like putting a can of tomato paste in the microwave and, like Jacob, practically laughing when Bella breaks her arm after the kiss. At least the movie had him give Jacob a disappointed look.

-- Heck, any of the other Cullens would've done it. They all seemed up for it. Edward was the only hesitant one. --
Which was ridiculous, why was he the only one who had a problem.

-- One, the kiss that bordered on sexual assault. --
If I remember it right, its been a while since I read them, it more than just bordered on it, he would have been had up on charges, film same thing, she could have had him arrested for assault. That was when I started to get the idea Meyer did not write all of the books herself.

I must agree Charlie in the book was pretty stupid, it was a wonder how he got on at all let alone be, if I recall right?, police chief.

Conflict, for conflict's sake. There really was no need for him to have this problem.

I blame Meyer's editors for a lot of the problems. Someone should've pointed out the flaws in her story telling.

All they saw was money. Which is what is wrong with most stuff these days, sure people have always liked money but it seems now they don't feel they have to earn it. 

I have always loved this film.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I keep two different lists. One is my favorite films and the other is my list of best films.

One of my best films doesn't necessarily mean it's one of my favorites to watch, if that makes any sense. And vice versa. One of my faves to watch mightn't be what I would consider a great film.

For example, on my list of favorite films is one called 'Beautiful Girls'. Uma Thurman, Matt Dillon and a young Natalie Portman. Man, I love watching that film. But it doesn't rate too well on my list of 'best films'.

I don't think Twilight is a great film. But it is, for me, a very entertaining film and one I have enjoyed watching quite a few times. And I will be watching it some more.

I like the music, the mood, the tone, and look of it. I like the chemistry between the actors and I love Kristen Stewart with those dark chocolate eyes.

It's not even what I would consider a 'guilty pleasure' because I seriously don't think the film is bad enough to rate as such. I don't feel bad or guilty about liking the film at all.
