this movie is universally hated, and i've never seen it but i assume it's genuinely a terrible movie, but the reaction it usually gets proves how stunningly and embarrassingly childish your typical dragonball/z fan is. a lot of them are pretty pitiful people. just thought i would throw that out there.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
The movie has very little in common with the DRAGON BALL anime it's based on, which is the core of their anger. Aside from the Caucasian playing Goku. It's the SUPER MARIO BROS. (1993) of a new generation.
I've never read the manga, so I'm just comparing the film to the anime. I think they may have been trying to merge the PILAF and KING PICCOLO sagas, and then give it a SPIDER-MAN twist. The anime is definitely superior, but I do have a soft spot for DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION.
I was only vaguely familiar with DRAGON BALL and DRAGON BALL Z in my youth until I saw this film. I enjoyed the movie enough to track down all the anime DVDs. And while the anime is better, it wasn't enough to make me hate the film.
I guess I can see why the die hard fans are so upset, but it is pitiful of them for attacking anyone who actually enjoyed the film.
do a lot of people actually take issue with a white guy playing Goku? because a white guy has voiced Goku in the most popular version of the show for over 15 years now.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
well hopefully they're the same people who don't like the english dubbed version of the show because that's the only way it makes sense.
A lot of anime are dubbed by white voice actors, so I guess fans let that slide. Cleveland on FAMILY GUY is voiced by a white guy, but if FAMILY GUY was ever made into live-action, fans would demand a black actor.
I don't like English dubbed, actually I don't like dub in general, and I don't have a problem with Goku being played by a white guy. Does that make sense to you?

For anime or live-action? So you don't mind who plays the live-action role, as long as they speak with their native language? Or you don't mind who voices the anime as long as it's in Japanese?
Personally I prefer English dubbing. Subtitles are too much of a distraction. A little reading is okay, but when it's an entire TV series or movie it tends to distract from the action on screen.
I've tried over the years to locate the English dubbed versions of TRANSFORMERS: SUPER-GOD MASTERFORCE and TRANSFORMERS: VICTORY. Admittedly the dubbing for TRANSFORMERS: THE HEADMASTERS can be unintentionally hilarious, but it annoys me greatly when people just tell me to watch them with subtitles as if it's some kind of anime fanboy textbook response.
I don't like dub of any language for anime in general, because it sounds extremely awkward, and the low quality of the voice actors don't help. They mostly sound robotic and unnatural, unlike the voice actors in anime (not saying Japanese voice actors are always better than voice actors in other countries, just saying that the voice actors hired to do the dubbing are usually not very professional). And when they try to translate Japanese names into English... It's just disastrous. Although, I have seen and heard people say that there are anime that sounds very good in dub, in most cases are anime that have settings similar to Western movies, or anime that has Western names (except Attack on Titan, the dubbed version of this one is just utterly terrible). I like it when movies/anime/live actions I watch are in its native language, especially live-action and movies, because I like it when the sound matches the environment. There are also jokes that don't translate well from one language to the other. I tried watching Hotel Transylvannia 2 dubbed in my language once, it was okay, but the whole package is just not there. If you prefer dub, you should watch the dubbed version, if that helps you enjoy what you're watching better. Anime fan just don't like it when someone watches the dubbed version then go says "That anime looks good but it sounds like trash. It's terrible!" kinda thing. It's also true that most, but not all, anime fans like sub better.
I wouldn't mind bringing in the fact that aside from Goku not even being human, is it ever specified that this is our "Earth", and not an alternate universe or another planet all together that humans just renamed Earth. Because blowing up the moon had no side effects, and I never heard them reply to any place as a country of origin, like Japan, US, whatever. I'm just Saiyan.
I don't see how that proves it, the movie was literally so terrible that Akira Toriyama not only commented on how terrible it was, but he also got involved with dragon ball again (for battle of gods and onward) because of it.
i've seen people throw online hissy fits about this movie. they're childish about stuff in the show. ask the typical dbz fan what they think of a character like Gohan and see what kind of responses you get.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
I thought he was okay with it and even said to think of it as an alternate universe before fans got mad and he quickly jumped on the whole "I had no say, they didn't listen to any of my ideas and suggestions and the whole thing was awful" bandwagon.
To answer what you said, he said to "think of it as an alternate universe" before the movie came out (basically before he even saw it). He didn't jump on a bandwagon (and most likely doesn't pay attention to that stuff), he just saw it, and thought it was terrible (the fact that he even said that says a lot XD considering Japanese customs)
I watched the Dragon Ball/Z series as a kid and have nostalgic attachment to the franchise but have never been fanatical about it. Didn't care about them casting a white guy as Goku either. Fanbases of many things are ridiculous being filled with nerds whose fandom is an integral part of their existence so whether criticism or misrepresentation of their beloved happens they will go crazy.
This movie certainly deserves its hate for not just being a bad representation of Dragon Ball but a horrible movie.
did you ever have a problem with the fact that a white guy voiced Goku in the English dub of the show? most of the characters were voiced by white people, in fact.

A white guy voicing an Asian character is not the same as a white guy playing an Asian character in a movie.

How so? A White person can't look like an Asian person. How are the vocal tones different? You can't really tell somebody s race because of their voice.
you've never listened to a Japanese guy (born and raised in Japan) talk compared to a guy from the US (born and raised there)? are you trying so hard to be PC that you ignore simple facts that aren't actually racist?

show me where i mentioned the language they were speaking. i'll wait. i'll wait patiently for you to quote me in the exact spot where i said a Japanese guy can't speak English.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
Because Asian Americans (those of Asian decent born and raised in the United States) speak fluent English but you think that them being Asian stops them from speaking English fluently even if they are born and raised in the United States.
Of course I am focusing on Americans of Asian descent because they don't have accents and speak English fluently which completely debunks your nonsense.
show me where i said asian american in that comment.
Here:
white people and Asian people have very distinct vocal tones
By simply saying "Asian people" you are including all Asians regardless of where they are from. So that includes Asian Americans. Also, by writing simply "white people" you are also including all white people regardless of where they are from which is ridiculous because there are white people that are not born in an English speaking country and do not speak English fluently or at all.

an asian person is someone from asia. an asian american is someone from asia that moved to america or an american with asian descent.
asian asian american
look at those 2 terms. you can see they are different terms. if you listen to an asian person talk and someone from the US talk you will be able to tell which one is which.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
so white people (europeans, australians, canadians, and americans) all have the same accents as asian people (excluding the asian half of russia. you know what i mean by asian people so don't play that game)?
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
You're the one playing games. So I'll just repeat what I wrote:

There is no assumption. It's simple logic. You are a dishonest person and know that you have been exposed so are trying to weasel out of it.
Sorry but it won't work. Once again:

I never wanted to see this movie. Someone invited me to the Cinema theatre to see this and I wanted to punch him. Years passed and it was on TV, I said what te hell, let's see if it's that terrible. OMFG. My mother hear some weird noises I was making and thought I was feeling sick. "what's wrong" she said, "it's this stupis movie!". "What movie?". "El Dragon Ball Gringo. Guess what characters are those." My mom said "That's easy! That's Gohan and she's Videl, duh". "No, mom, he's suposed to be Goku, mom, GOKU as GOKU with a tail the one who lives in a mountain and the first woman he ever meets is Bulma! And that's Chichi!" MOM: "WHAT!! GOKU? What's Goku doing in a school??? Chichi??? What, where, how??" *mom runs away confused*.
My mom was about 60 years old when that happened. She's a great Dragon Ball fan, and she doesn't care about asian actors or caucasians... she knows Saiya-jins are ficticious. But she knows Goku's story.
Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language
ah. you're one of those embarrassingly childish dragonball superfans i referred to in my post. you have some very serious anger problems and you should see a therapist to work them out. wanting to punch someone because they invited you to see a movie is not acceptable human behavior and should be corrected.
Well Tony, nobody wants a war. If we can't do business why we'll just shake hands and that'll be it!
As a big fan of Dragonball I didn't have a problem with the liberties they took with the characters and source material as it makes for something fresh and new if done well, its just that the film itself was executed so poorly.
They were trying to cash in on Spider-Man which explains the decision to put Goku in high school and since they were going in that direction it would also make sense to make Chi-Chi his high school crush since she's his wife and it's an easier way of getting them together. It's not because they were giving them Gohan and Videl's storyline from the last season of DBZ.
