But was he that bad?

Seriously, what did he do that was so heinous to earn him the title Bad Lieutenant?

He was a good lieutenant really- got the job done in the end, etc

Maybe 'The bit sloppy lieutenant' would be a better title?

reply

threatened people, stole drugs, had sex with radnom guys girlfriend with him watching, almost killed an old lady, etc... I'd say quite enough

reply

Hi Vincen7! Thanks for replying. Here is what I think!

threatened people- but werent these all criminals? I think Nic was one of those maverick detectives who may have occaionally broke the rules but got the job done.

Stole Drugs- yes, but it's a bit of a shady area the whole stealing from criminals area. Just ask Robin Hood!

Had sex with random guy's girlfriend- well, she seemed to be into it

Almost killed an old lady- who was harbouring the key to the case!

I am more sure than ever that the guy was unbad!

reply

ok, to each his own.)

reply

ok for real have you met a cop like that? Because anyone like that is a loose cannon. He may be good at heart but his self-destructive behavior does not help with police work. Nicholas Cage really did well with his role. Either way if you say he is a good cop, most likely you wil be just like him; doing drugs, *beep* some whore in the ass while her boyfriend watches, killing some old lady, letting some prisoner drown in his cell, etc. I suggest you get some psychiatric help because your definition of good and evil is really warped.

reply

"well, she seemed to be into it"...

Yeah, because it was either bang the dirty insane drug-addicted cop in the street or go to prison...oh yeah, she was sooooooo into it.

reply

Well actually from what I've heard, it was the studio who gave the film that title, since it resembled the old version of that film, and they probably thought it would get some publicity due to people thinking it was a remake or something.

So the title is just incidental.

reply

lol!!!! you know you're right, come to think of it he WAS a good lieutenant really- got the job done in the end, etc.'The bit sloppy lieutenant' is good!

reply

He definitely was bad.

He had an out of control drug habit, out of control gambling problem and threatened to pervert the law to compensate for this. How else can you explain him trying to get the football player to throw the game. How do you explain his losing the boy, who got away when he was gambling?

As for the women being "into" the daddy fetish sex he has outside, how can you justify threatening the boyfriend with death? Forcing him to watch, bad indeed.

There are countless other things, but I think what you are trying to argue is that "the end justifies the means". Meh.

I will say that what he does really isn't "bad" in comparison to how the rest of the characters in the movie are, especially his trigger happy partner.

reply

Yeah, fair play about the threatening the boyfriend thing, and the football player- BUT, both of these people were druggers, perhaps it taught them a lesson in a roundabout way?

I don't see your point about the girls boyfriend and football player doing drugs.

That's assumes that all drug users are bad, which would mean our Lieutenant is definitely bad since he uses the drugs he confiscates from these people. Plus I don't know what lesson is to be learned from watching a crooked cop have weird sex with your girlfriend and forcing you to watch, or what lesson can be taken from a crooked camp confiscating your weed and threatening to turn you in unless you throw a football game. The only lesson those two probably learned was that cops can't be trusted.

On a side note, isn't that scene with the woman in the sleazy parking lot the only time we see Terrence do anything sexual? It's also the only scene he fires his gun in too right?

Just something I noticed, because his gun is typically stuffed in his pants right where his dick would be.

reply

Yeah, see yout point- especially about mr. gun-gun knickers. I suppose those, if the footie player and the jilted boyfriend went home, took stock, and decided, 'sheeee-it, the demon weed/nose candy/disco powder/tinny tans/ inky jetstream/ duplo shtstorm/ megabyte tango/ csi skimping/ doggy popp just aint worth it, I'm gonna pick up my life', then surely thats a good thing? Considering that their drug habits had brought them aggro?

reply

you ask if he was really that bad?

so, in the course of the film we see him:

1 - have sex with someone to let them off a drugs charge, and steal their drugs;

2 - cause a situation where 3 or more people are murdered;

3 - try to fix a (pro) football game to further his own ends;

4 - steel drugs from police evidence;

5 - help to corrupt on cop (the guy)and try to corrupt the second into stealing for him (the woman);

5 - threaten two old women, both innocent and cause one distress and harm buy cutting off her air supply;

6 - pull a gun on two old woman and say they should be killed;

7 - running a police investigation and carrying a firearm while in a state of halucination;

8 - I presume that when he got his gun back he was carrying an unlicenced firearm as he was still on partial duty;

9 - aiding know felons;

10 - encouraging and condoning illegal gambling;

11 - spending drug money (to pay his bookie);

there is probably more but i cannot remember them at the mo.

now if you cant see what the makes him a Bad polis there is something wrong.

Now you're just nit picking

"The Lieutenant Who Doesn't Play By The Rules But Gets The Job Done: I Want Your Badge And Your Gun - Just Give Me 48 Hours Chief" would have been a snappy title.

"The Dee-ayes got my balls in a vice!"

reply

Haha he was a terrible Lieutenant! Bloody funny though, think it was brilliant that he got away with it all.

reply

Comapared to Keitel in Ferrara's original he was an angelic lieutenant!

reply

I dont think so.. Keitel was in conflict with his actions, at least..

reply

With one action to be precise, i.e. the murder he was finally meant to commit to pay off his debt or else it'd be his ass. Otherwise, he didn't give a sh!t.

reply

I don't think so.. there were scenes where he is crying and it was pretty obvious he was unhappy and addicted.. while Cage, on the other hand, seemed to be enjoying what he did..

reply

Yeah. You do realize though that the "crying" scenes took place after he lost that bet he knew he couldn't pay up for and was ordered to perform a murder for compensation. Had he won the bet you can be sure there'd never have been any "crying" or unhappiness.

reply

I don't think so.. he was also crying after being with those prostitutes, for example..

reply

You mean how he fell asleep being drunk in a church, after harassing those two women in the car (who by the way didn't appear to be prostitutes)? Well, if that's crying to you it might explain the confusion.

reply

no, I was reffering to the scene where he is naked with some girls, probably prostitutes, they were hugging each other, etc.. and after that he starts crying.. maybe you don't remember it..

reply

Of course I remember, now that you're specific enough. You're meaning the sequence at the beginning, where they're dancing to "pledging my love" and Keitel showing off his dick. Immediately after he's supplied that dealer with stolen dope.

No, he isn't crying. He's making faces. And even if he had a sentimental moment, it'd rather be due to the song.

reply

Well to be honest I'd rather bump into Cages lieutenant than Keitels, Cage's character is so over the top and comical and a caricature whereas Keitels seems way more realistically bad. I'm sure there's cops like that all over the force. Doubtful there would be any that are like Cage's though. He's just a nut job.
