One of the most memorable films of recent memory...

Whether you loved it or hated, you have to admit its a very unique and memorable film. It's one of the strangest films I've ever seen, and I'm a big fan of notoriously weird directors like Lynch and Jodorowsky, but this is weird on a different level, as it's a fairly standard police story filled with clichés but has the occasional taste of madness throughout. The first 3/4 of it is very similar to the original Bad Lieutenant but with Cage's extremely over the top acting giving it a more absurd feel. It abruptly starts going into these Lynchian like shots of iguanas with old timey music playing, which makes you wonder what the directors intentions are, is this a portrayal of Cage's lucid mind or is this just the director throwing the audience a curveball, something this film does a few times. For example, the whole film is building up to Mcdonagh's wreckless behavior getting him killed(exactly how the first one ended), but just near the end they have one hazily written scene where all the major plot points are instantly resolved. It's like the director spanking you for thinking you knew where this was going. Then it has a very cryptic ending. It's very uncompromising, it's refusal to be what you expect makes it really stand out.

I loved it. One good scene after another, nasty characters that are interesting and an absurdity that doesn't feel forced.

Has quite a memorable score too. One of the best I've heard in a while

Same here! I thought it was very entertaining with great acting all around especially from Cage and Xibit. Their dialogue was quite memorable ie *beep* elk exchange. Hilarious!

Agreed, memorable. I get a deep feeling that the alchemic (sic) Herzog/Cage effect is kind of happily accidental or an example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. What you wrote calls to mind the myriad of worthless films in which directors tried unsuccessfully for this effect, achieving only celluloidal-poop, but here, largely by accident or voodoo, it is.

I almost never find a film I would hate by analysis, but watch and love like this one.

And I infer one of your Lynch implications, maybe. Mysterious, disturbing and mesmerizing for the most part, plus bonus giggles. Rarely done this well.
