Waste Of Time

As far as I could see....There wasn't much redeemable about this movie. Without getting into the total absurdity of the actions of the lead the movie was put together like some college kids first film project. It had good actors, but never lived up to its potential. I don't know if that's bad writing or bad directing, but it's really a snooze fest....

You NEED to get into the total absurdity of the actions of the lead. Therein lies the genius.

It went way beyond my BS tolerance level. I have a tough time when something becomes so improbable that it becomes its own parody.....Then again this comes down to the eye of the beholder I guess...

But Port Of Call - New Orleans WAS sort of a parody of Hollywood crime movies from the beginning. Herzog never intended to play any of this stuff straight.

One thing you could not call it is a snooze-fest, even if you hate it. You say yourself, you thought it "absurd". I can understand people not enjoying it for a variety of reasons but I can't believe anyone would be bored by it.

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

ya what a horrible movie...definitely makes my list of possible worst movie ever.

this was the best movie cage has made in a long, long time haha.

it was not what i thought it would be, but it was borderline brilliant.

my son, my son was really good also, maybe even better cause ill take mike shannon over cage anyday

reply

Yeah, I don't know though, Michael Shannon is great and everything, but sometimes you just can't beat a good bit of the Cage effect. This movie is definitely a Cage masterpiece along with Con Air and Face Off.
There is something about the guy that is strangely compelling and hilarious... actually yeah, he is the funniest actor to watch, Vampire's Kiss anyone?? no? probably no one has seen that, or Wild at Heart, but really, he is incapable of making a film unentertaining... It's probably more the fact that he's unintentionally funny, unless that's the way he's planned his career, in which case he is a silent genius... but I always laugh my ass off whenever i see him in a film, he's just so great, I feel like I'm laughing WITH him, not at him, he's that good. He's just great, dunno what more to say, you just can't beat him as an actor, he really hits the right notes, now... Put the bunny... back in the box

wild at heart is prob my favorite film hes ever been in. also what about snake eyes man? that has always been one of my fav cage performances. hes so totally absurd as a character in that movie hahaha and its a really underrated film. but yea you are right, sometimes you just cant beat a good bit of cage effect. then there is also adaptation, possibly his best film and you get double the cage lol. but really bad lieutenant is one of the most insane films ever made. cage and herzog made it all the more crazy.

No, I don't think he planned his career to go the way it has. He's just done some real stinkers, and they end up being unintentionally funny. Proof of this is the remake of The Wicker Man (2006). It's a horrible movie (the original is an awesome cult movie) but there are moments of pure unintentional hilarity. I think, at times, NC has been intentionally humorous, but the more his career goes on, the less intentional it is.

I have to agree with the OP; this movie stinks on ice.

Agree!

In a way, I do agree with you about it "never living up to its potential". It wasn't exactly ground-breaking cinema for me (not in the same way that Aguirre thing was, the only other Herzog I've seen I think) but at the same time, there were some notable idiosyncrasies in this that kept it from ever becoming stale (or that kept it from becoming a pointless repetition of the Ferrara flick); the subtlety was strangely rewarding, too (even if some of the plot machinations concerning Cage's interactions with those drug dealers were rather predictable and dull). But, yeah, in any case, it can hardly be summed up as a snooze-fest. The iguana and fishes can attest to that.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
