Were some parts supposed to be funny?

I only saw it on video but there were plenty of scenes where I couldn't help but to laugh. Some big laughs for me were stuff like the iguanas, pulling a gun on two old ladies, and the soul still dancing. If I was in a movie theater, I wouldn't be able to hold back the laughter. I'm not sure if other people would be laughing though. Was this stuff intentional or just made to be taken very seriously?

Intentional.

The funniest part was when he told the two old ladies "Did you ever think of your kids? Sucking up all their inheritance with that breathing tube" or something like that. Classic.

Also, same scene: he was shaving himself behind the door while he waited lol.

Replace funny with surreal.

Hey akuma!

But yeah, this is a Werner Herzog movie, and he quite often inserts his own brand of humor into his films.

Really, this is a comedy. There's a steady stream of laughs throughout.
And they're very much intentional.

Comedies are supposed to be funny.

Fortunately, this film is hilarious.

cage's character was on no sleep and probably drugs when he messed with the old ladies, hence the incoherence and full grip of what he is doing. cage's character's drug imbalance is the best part of the movie. the way he talks changes throughout the movie depending what he is on. sometimes slurred. sometimes short. sometimes to the point. sometimes off track. just like when you are actually on drugs

This was almost a re-imagining of Shakespeare's "Richard III" - first off with the obviousness of Cage's snaky, 'humpbacked' manipulator and the dark, dark humor - sure, it's a comedy without a doubt.

I suppose there were parts that were ´not´ meant to be funny.

Saw it in theaters, people laughed at those moments. Clearly was supposed to be black humor. Easily some of the funniest lines/scenes I've seen a while.

Life has funny, surreal, beautiful, dark, damaging moments. This movie dosent really sit in one genre, most great movies dont.
