Embracing the Surreal with Lizards
I liked the way Herzog used lizards, big and small, to represent McDonagh's slipping hold on reality. Very bizarre and surreal perfectly placed throughout the film for added effect.

shareYeah, I've only seen a few films by Herzog, but he appears to use animal imagery quite a bit, to parallel the characters. In Aguirre, there's the sloth that spends most of his life asleep, and the monkeys. In Stroszek, theres birds and the chicken. In this one it heavily uses Iguanas, crocodiles, fish, snakes, anything with scales and those eyes.
