so bad its good.
finally watched this and was pleasantly surprised.
Im a big fan of movies that are so bad theyre good.
Ive always wondered if someone could make one intentionally and this film answers that question. 8 outta 10.

If you're a fan of so bad they're good movies then I'm sorry, but why are you on this board? Movies like The Room, Birdemic, The Wicker Man, Plan 9 from Outer Space; those are so bad they're friggin' awesome. If you check around various review sites you'll find that Bad Lieutenant pretty much got universally good reviews. I mean, it's got an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, which I don't usually put stock in, but is actually right in this case.
All I'm saying is that you should do a little background checking before assuming a film is so bad it's good. This film just happens to be so good it's fantastic.
A background check doesn't dictate whether or not a movie is good.
shareI don't need "various review sites" to give me my opinion.
Bad Lieutenant was hilarious to me.
So bad its good moments:
1) Cage turns into Jimmy Stewart
2) Cage blows up on the two old ladies
3) the ridiculous treasure story he tells eva mendes
4) "ahhhhh its okay baby" (reminded me of wiseau's "oh hi doggie")
5) "mmmuullllestchoo"
theres obviously more but thats off the top of my head.
anyway, I really think herzog got exactly what he wanted out of cage with this.
ill agree with you that it was a "fantastic" movie.
8 outta 10 from me.
Deliberately humorous moments being genuinely funny now renders films so bad that they're good?
This world makes no sense to me...
those were all intentionally humorous moments...do you consider all movies that use comedy so bad they are good?...wtf ur logic confuzers me...
shareIt's actually brilliant. Don't you understand dark humour OP???
I got what this film was all about on the first viewing. Yes it has it's "dark" moments but that's pretty much unavoidable when you're dealing with a character who has serious drug issues. I just don't think you completely understood the intention. But hey, you have your opinion and by god...you're entitled.
Ah, yes....The old elitist's catch-all: "He doesn't like it?!? He must be too stupid to understand it, then."
Both versions of Bad Lieutenant are utter garbage. They're not dark comedies, they're poorly written and aimless pieces of trash. Not entertaining in the least.
How aren't they dark comedies?
I have to return some video tapes.
I completely understood the intention. Herzog took Cage, an actor who creates unintentional humour in mostly everything that he does, and consciously used this to create a unique movie.
Like I said, I had always wondered if someone could make a movie so bad its good. Herzog definitely answered this question.
I thought this movie was hilarious. It was mostly because of Cage making a jackass out of himself. There is probably no other actor in the world that could have pulled this role off.
More like Herzog making a jackass out of Cage... and if a comedy is funny, it can hardly be called "bad", can it? And it´s indeed the role Cage was born to play.

I agree they were intentional. Thats what my post says:
"Im a big fan of movies that are so bad theyre good.

The only reason those moments are humurous, is because they were so bad. Nicolas Cage made Wickerman unintentionally funny, and I think thats why he was selected for this; to take an average script and turn it into something so ridiculous you cant help but laugh. Credit to Herzog to hiring the one actor who could pull off this role.
That car scene was off the hook!
shareI didn't think this was a so bad it's good movie. Troll 2 and Shark Attack 3 - now they're so bad it's good. I thought it was a more positive riff of the original Bad Lieutenant, this time Cage's character has a happier ending , it's explained why he's addicted to drugs and although he's quite seedy in this one, he's no where near as seedy as Harvey Keitels's character. It was really just a crime thriller with the Bad Lieutenant element.
shareIt's good, if u haven't seen the wolf of wall street, check it out, you'll see that the director copied some of the moments from this film.

the part where Cage laughs in Big Fate's face like a maniac, i had to rewind and watch at least 6 times. "...you can keep 75% and not go to jail for the rest of your life! HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HA!!!"
freaked me the hell out. how can he act so well in some parts and some movies and be genuinely awful to watch in others? i think his performance in this movie is one of his best.
I think he has a very high esteem of himself and when he sees a script that goes like ''A biker that turns into a superhero burning skeleton that fights evil and crime'' he genuinely believes that he can play the role and make the whole movie awesome. He always tries to carry a movie on his outlandish performances and they don't always hit the mark, because often the movies he chooses are crap and nothing can be done to make them good.
shareyou make no sense
shareI can't tell if it was "So bad it's good' or not, but I do know it was hilarious, and I bet they didn't intend it to be that way. Nicolas Cage is as funny in this as he was in "Vampire's Kiss".
