Should have taken the goathearers with you..!

If they had done that. There would have been no movie.

How stupid was the decision to let them go?

Taking the herders would've been disasterous, surely would've given away the position of the Seal team... I think the best course of action, aside from executing them, would've been tying them loosely to a tree. And taking their shoes as well, loose enough that they could've untied themselves in a few hours......

What you have to understand is, where the herders go, the goats will follow.
A crack SEAL team couldn't very well accomplish their mission surrounded by a bunch of animals.
Luttrell has described how they considered every option; even the most ridiculous, such as zip tying all of the goats along with the herders. Tying them up would have inevitably had the same result as what did occur, as people from the town would eventually search for the men, or the goats would have returned without them. Killing them was debated, but that goes against part of their credo. The only real choice was to let them go, and prepare for the worst. (which they did)

How about:
Two of the soldiers stay to guard the goat herders.
The other two...hike up to the peak to make the call to command.
Once they are certain help is on the way, they then can let the goatherders go in however slow a fashion they choose (for example, take their shoes....or, just let the old man go, and leave the kids tied to a tree to be rescued when the old man finally makes it down the mountain). But the main point is....there were 4 soldiers. Two could watch the goat herders.....the other two could hike up to the peak to make the phone call. Why.....doesn't.....anyone.....on.....these....boards.....think....of.....this?????

Not everyone will know that they are sailors instead of soldiers, especially seeing as Afghanistan is a landlocked, arid country and that the USA does have an army also that does have it's own special forces also. Overlooking the fact there are 'frogmen' in a country with little water is a very easy mistake for someone to make.

It isn't a valid argument because of their stupidity, they not only screwed the operation up but got everyone killed.

They could have tied up 2 goat herders and taken one with them. Releasing him when they were at extraction point so he could go and release the others.

Real stupid decision.

That's a bit harsh.

Time was a factor, for one. They couldn't debate endlessly how to deal with the situation, so they chose what they considered to be the best option under the circumstances.
SEAL's are trained to work together on a mission, which means fast movement, accuracy and attention to detail. You think they could have done that while dragging along tied and bound goat herders with them in rugged mountain terrain? Far too many risks to calculate. (which I'm sure they did)
The herders were still civilians, and tying them up and leaving them meant that they most likely would have frozen to death once night fell. As Luttrell has described, the area they were in also had snowfall. They didn't want to risk non-enemy deaths.
